Katrina

Here and here is how to help.
And, since I know he reads this weblog every evening, an open letter to
George W. Bush. Sadly, somehow we knew this would happen…

Del.icio.us

Late to the party as ever, I’ve just started to play around with del.icio.us, the much praised “online social bookmarking service”. And that’s what it is, basically. You “bookmark” sites you come across, tag them with keywords (e.g. zappa), others get to see your bookmarks and can even subscribe to them. With a bit of hacking it’s also possible to have your bookmarks included on your own webpage (as I’m doing with my bookmarks over here). Does anyone else in the audience have a del.icio.us account they want to share with us?

TRFZB Online

Well I’ll be darned: I had no idea that “The Real Frank Zappa Book” is available online in its entirety. Nobody ever tells me anything! Funny quote at the bottom: “Yes, all of these boldfaces, italics and underlines are really in the book!” :)

Zappa Straße

A street in Berlin is to be named after Zappa:

Die bisherige namenlose Straße 13 in Höhe Landsberger Allee soll nach der US-Rocklegende Frank Zappa (1940-1993) benannt werden. Diesen Beschluß faßten die Bezirksverordneten. Orwo-Haus-Verein-Sprecher Tobias Nöthen sagte: “Das ist genau das richtige Signal für unser Musikzentrum.”

Way cool. Know of any other streets named after Uncle Frank?
(Thanks vrnzr!)

About Time YOU Had A Dot Com

Dreamhost, the people that have been hosting KUR for almost 4 years now, have given me a $10 gift certificate that I can either apply on my own account or give out to someone else.
If anyone’s interested to sign up with Dreamhost using this $10 discount (and I can think of a couple, ahem), just drop me a note and we’ll work something out.

You’d think there’s a catch but really there isn’t. Their hosting rocks, their tech support is superb, they keep adding features, disc space and bandwidth to the point where it’s borderline absurd — all that starting at $7,95/month. So there you go. First come, first served.

Update: The gift certificate has been claimed. :)

The Perfect Album

Good thread at plastic.com about the phenomenon of the perfect album. “An album in which every track is great, each one worthy of being a hit. An album with not a single song you would skip past and nothing mediocre or even average.” Here’s the compiled list. Some Zappa picks: Waka/Jawaka, Apostrophe and Joe’s Garage. Can’t believe nobody mentioned Roxy & Elsewhere or OSFA…

Ugly Radio Again

Word has it Napoleon M. Brock did a recording session earlier this year with indie musician Robert Kramer for an upcoming release called “Legacy Of Love”. Meanwhile Kramer himself is on a crusade against sucky commercial radio:

Maybe it’s time for the radio station fatcats to trade in their Jaguars for a nice pre-owned Toyota, return the airwaves to the public, and start programming the kind of music people REALLY want to hear….to quote the late Frank Zappa, it’s time to “KILL UGLY RADIO”..once and for all…

Jim Owens writes: “If Kramer has the cahones to keep steam on this issue, I will certainly support his efforts to knock down some walls for indie music, and all interested parties should do the same.”

Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point: a map of the world in which the visibility of each country on the map results from the quantity of media coverage the country receives, so those countries that do not make the news disappear progressively. There’s currently a little black spot at the top right of South-America which probably wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for that bright Christian Right intellectual Pat Robertson. (via udn)
