Musicovery

Do not be fooled by its candy store look — be sure to check out Musicovery.

Sharl came across this and made me have a look. So I gave it a spin, hitting the Latino button, as I’ve been in a Tropicalia mood as of late. Musicovery delivered, and then some. You’d think the “Mood” tab would be a useless gizmo. I sure did. But somehow, it really, actually works close to perfection. One caveat: the site doesn’t sync with last.fm, which is a shame. Nevermind though, give Musicovery a whirl.

… and no, I am not getting paid for, and am in no way affiliated with musicovery.

Hot Poop Facelift

Remember Ye Olde Hot Poop?

Back when we received the C&D letter from the ZFT last December, Dr Sharl and I jumped through all kinds of loops to come up with an engaging lay-out, while at the same time attempting to appease ZFT’s scum lawyers. It was “panic football”, to be honest.

Well today I’ve fiddled about a bit with the look and feel of this now abandoned weblog — one which, mind you, had been running since July 2001. My aim was to line up its looks a bit more with current KUR aesthetics, while maintaining a feel for why exactly Hot Poop came to be terminated.

I was originally going to make it an all black/white affair, as if you were to be looking at an old family picture. Dr Sharl then came up with the notion of adding some sepia colour. And so here it is.

Hot Poop Sepia

A seven year work of love abandoned, derelict — gone but not forgotten.

Huge Collection Of 78 RPM Records

… and when I say huge, I mean huge:

The following is a list of over 3600 titles recorded from my collection of 78 rpm records. Many of them are linked to MP3 files and will play what was recorded. No sound enhancement, just what was recorded. Right now, there are over 2,450 titles on this page linked to mp3’s.

You’ll find recordings from such diverse musicians as Spike Jones, Hank Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Jelly Roll Morton, Les Paul, Gene Krupa — oh, just have a look yourself. (via MeFi)

FZ Alumni Muxtape

After spending the good part of the last two weeks packing all my beloved FZ albums, tapes, CDs, (as well as everything else I own) into more boxes than I care to count in preparation for the big move downtown — I decided that the last thing I ought to do before tearing down and packing up the G5 is upload a muxtape of some of my favourite FZ alumni tracks. Click here to check them out. They’ll all be left up until next Friday. See you after the move!

The Be-Bop Bass Notes: Tom Fowler Interview

The audition was very simple. He had me play a couple of odd muted things and groove for a while, and then he said ‘OK, you’re it’. That was a really good band. I then just did Frank’s stuff for a few years until I broke my hand in the middle of a tour which was my downfall. We were playing football and I broke this bone right in the middle of the tour in Dayton, Ohio.

A nice, long interview with one of the best bass players ever (from the great site www.afka.net) Recorded in 1996 – it was still new to me.

ICE-Z #3

It’s been a couple of weeks since La Grande Freak Out came to Paris. Les Fils de l’Invention who organised the event this year, have just published an “incomplete” transcript/draft of the various sessions that took place. Some interesting reading that you may download here (PDF, 852Kb).

I Am Three

Adam Irving, avid KUR reader and member of I Am Three needs your help:

In October me and my friend, performing under the name I Am Three are driving round Europe gigging. We intend to drop by Belgium, Netherlands, Holland, Germany, France and Italy. The tour isn’t for the purpose of making money its simply because we love music and playing in new places. […] after hundreds of emails to venues such as cafes/bars/clubs etc we only have the Italy gigs sorted. In all these cafe bar filled countries, NOBODY seems to want to invite a double bass & acoustic guitar duo loose on their stage, even for free.

They’re good though; just give their myspace page a listen. So: any European club-owning music lovers reading this willing to book them? Go on then!

Porno Soundtracks

What happens if you put three professional musicians in a recording studio and … have them watch porn movies?

While you probably begin imagining strange situations, these guys made it a creative venture. They created a new soundtrack to the 70ties adult movies they were watching – turning off the sound and just letting their instincts come up with vivid musical imaginations. And it worked.

Have a listen.
