Strange Units

Looking up “The Truman Show” on Wikipedia just now, I clicked through a couple of times and stumbled upon this list of strange units of measurement. The Mikrotuki! The MegaFonzie! The Warhol! And of course, The Belgium:

Conservationists discussing the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest often use Belgium as an approximate measure of how much forest is being lost annually. The area of the country of Belgium is 30,528 km².

The Burroughs-Ponty Connection

… and that would be witchcraft:

The original satanic footage here is from a 1922 silent film which was re-released in 1968 with a soundtrack by Jean-Luc Ponty and narration by Burroughs. Either the 1922 original or the 1968 re-release was titled Superstition: Middle Ages and Now.

Around The World

Perhaps the Drammen ’82 boot isn’t your cup of tea? Jazz-Rock-Fusion-Guitar has a boot up for grabs called “Around The World” labeling it “various live 1973” (Rapidshare alert, unfortunately).

The Preston-Disney Connection

An interview with Don Preston, who just turned 74.
On how his love for dissonance came to be:

“When I was a kid, I saw Fantasia. Like 25 times. My favorite part was the dinosaurs, and behind them was Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring.’ It was one of the most dissonant pieces Stravinsky ever wrote. And it’s probably what led to me thinking like that. It was one of the most powerful things in my life.”

The Making Of Freak Out!

Being the only one who mysteriously didn’t receive the Barfie’s email I am a bit late with this, but on to the news:

zappa MOFO

  • the release of MOFO’s limited edition (4 discs + 60 page booklet) has been postponed to “just in time for Halloween”
  • the “regular” MOFO release (2 discs + 30 page booklet) is planned for 11 November and will be available in stores
  • only Disc 1 of both releases are the same ( ! )
  • today zappa.com should be streaming a few samples of the album. Update: yup, #77 and #78.

Oh, and tickets for all ZPZ December shows should be on sale as of 29/30 September. For details, keep an eye on the tourdates page which has yet to be updated. (Yes: I did get that email!)

Fruitcake Ahoy

Homosexual rock stars! Groupies! SEX! SATAN! Oh boy:

Rocker Frank Zappa (who discovered the awful truth December 4, 1993 the second he died) proudly boasted: “I’m the devil’s advocate. We have our own worshippers who are called ‘groupies.’ Girls will give their bodies to musicians as you would give a sacrifice to a god.” (Peters Brothers, What About Christian Rock, p. 17)

YouTube & Warner Strike Music Licensing Deal

Yes indeed:

Under the deal, Warner Music has agreed to license its songs to the people who upload their videos to YouTube. Meaning that any video producer can now legally use Warner Music in their videos as theme or background music, or even produce alternative videos for Warner songs.

… and you know whose music is licensed under Warner, right?

Thunes Talks

The Idiot Bastard got to interview Scott Thunes recently:

IB: What can you tell me about the session with Lisa Popeil?
ST: You mean the original meeting? Or the week she was a full-fledged member of the ensemble before Frank had to fire her because it was painfully obvious that she was unable to deal with the real-music elements (ie. non-classical) of a rock-band’s particulars? Or the time we were in the bathroom together, making out? I don’t recall much about that particular time, so I was glad she mentioned it in song. I fondly recall her soft smooth skin, and her bounteous breasts and her obvious sexual passion, but I’m a gentleman and she’s a lady and we don’t talk about such things.

Hasn’t changed a bit, that Scott. :)
