You Gotta Have Goals, Guys…

On the bright side, at least you aren’t Canadian (these evil sons-a-bitches have been planning world domination ever since 1867…just watch ’em). Take the music of Celine Dion, for instance (an insidious effort to turn everyone into Canadians, one person at a time). I dare not link to any of her music videos for fear of infecting this great site, Barry.

The Forum Is Dead, Long Live The Forum!

As of this moment, the forum located at killuglyradio.com/forum, has been shut down, although its archives can still be browsed. From its ashes, a new forum has arisen: forum.killuglyradio.com. Go register now!

For those interested, a couple of reasons why we made the move:

  • The old forum software had built up several security holes, the worst one of which allowed for mass, unmoderated registration attempts — this culminated in me having to turn off automatic registration altogether, leaving me with the chore of manually approving every single registration request.
  • The structure of the old forums was just too idiosyncratic. Give people too much options as to where they are to post their message, and they will stop in their tracks and not post at all — to become lurkers at best.
  • The new digs just plain look better (provided the color cyan does not give you seizures.)

So there you have it. If you’re at all interested at following KUR spin-off discussions, if you wish to promote your favorite underestimated band, if you want to chat about this or that TV or DVD series:

forum.killuglyradio.com.

…and don’t forget to register.

Gil Scott-Heron at Wolfgang’s Vault

Activist poet and musician, Gil Scott-Heron’s musical career began in the late ’60s. He quickly emerged as a sharp, intelligent critic of contemporary culture, boasting terrific jazz-styled accompaniment. By the late ’70s, Scott-Heron’s sound had adopted a bit more of a contemporary R&B aesthetic, but his jazz roots remain clear. He hasn’t released any new recorded material since 1994’s Spirits, and in the early ’00s, faced prison time for drug possession charges. He has since been released, and as of early 2009, he is working on a new record, and still makes occasional live appearances.

Playing the Madison Square Garden stage on September 23rd, 1979, taking part in the famous series of “No Nukes” concerts organized by the Musicians United for Safe Energy, he reveals not just his politics yet a driving fusion between his worlds of jazz, poetry, and R&B.

Gil Scott-Heron – vocals

Robert Gordon – bass

Tony Green – drums

Carl Cornwell – saxophone

Ed Brady – guitar

Beatles On The Rooftop

I’m sure you’ve all seen this before — The Beatles’ last public performance:

The live concert idea culminated with the Beatles and [Billy] Preston performing 30 January [’69] on the rooftop of the Beatles’ Apple Building at 3 Savile Row before a small audience of friends and employees. The performance was cut short by the police after complaints about noise.

What a fabulous little mini-concert, considering the drama that was taking place between them at the time. Parts two and three.

Disclaimer: I have been suffering from a rather nasty case of the flu for the better part of this week which, according to the KUR Charter of Proper Conduct, allows one to post content that is not in the least bit related to FZ.

Snif.

Tuesday Mix: The Golden Era

Let your mind drift back fellow Zappa freaks to that Golden Era of Zappadom: the 1970s. During that decade he did his most prolific touring, began recording his live shows almost religiously, and produced some of the most successful and iconoclastic albums of his career. One might even say the 70s were Zappa’s zenith. It was the blueprint set down during this decade — through his live music, his albums, song lyrics and interviews — which laid down the foundation for the Frank Zappa mythos.

When compiling this particular mixtape, I decided to divide the tracks into suites of songs from individual performances (where possible) instead of just individual tracks (here or there). This way you get a much better feel of the live Zappa experience (the only thing better, of course, is having actually been there in person). There are quite a number of treats and surprises, both for the Zappa newbie as well as the Zappa diehard.

First there was the Mudshark, now there’s the Don PardoDo the Don Pardo, Barry!

Click here to listen to the mixtape (Be prepared, KUR-meisters, it’s another BIG one).

Note: If anyone feels we are infringing their copyright, contact us and we will remove the item in question.

John Mayall & His Bluesbreakers

Now that the weekend is here, and you’ve finally got some room to move, why not kick it off with these two live videos of John Mayall and His Bluesbreakers (probably the seminal british blues band) performing “An Eye For An Eye” and “Room To Move”. Just think of all the fantastic musicians who were Bluesbreakers at one time or other: Peter Green, Eric Clapton, John McVie, Don “Sugarcane” Harris, Aynsley Dunbar, and Mick Taylor just to name a handful. To this day, The Turning Point, John Mayall’s live album recorded at Bill Graham‘s Fillmore East on July 12, 1969, is still one of my top ten albums.

Note: In November 2008 Mayall announced on his website he was disbanding the Bluesbreakers to cut back on his heavy workload and give himself freedom to work with other musicians.

Pygmy Twylyte – Five Versions

I was going through my Zappa collection the other day, and I noticed I had quite a few versions of Pygmy Twylyte. The first four are covers by Tribute/Cover Bands, and the fifth is one of my favorite proto-versions from 1973, Texas:

Ed Palermo Big Band (Sonar, Baltimore, MD, 21 Sep 2006)

How do you think these later versions match up to the earlier version performed by FZ’s own band?
