Frusciante’s Zappa Band Audition

By the time he was 16, John Frusciante had mastered all of Frank Zappa’s guitar solos and had even auditioned for Zappa’s band, a sobering experience that drew him up short.

“I was sitting there thinking, do you want to be a rock star and write your own songs and draw all the girls,” he told Mojo magazine, “or do you want to be in Frank Zappa’s band, where you’ll be told what to do all the time, not allowed to take drugs, and it’s kind of a square band so there’s not going to be a lot of girls at the shows?”

Kind of a square band. Ha!

Colbert Roasts Bush

I’m a bit late to post this, but if you haven’t seen these video’s yet, you really should because they’re brilliant: comedian Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner drops a couple of napalm bombs on the Bush Administration — in the presence of an increasingly annoyed Shrub. The video’s: parts one, two, three.

Zappa? Sexy?

If Roger Bourland says so, it can’t but be true: Frank Zappa is sexy!

Thème astral pour Dweezil ZAPPA

“When (the) Moon is in the seventh house” – then where is Dweezil? Oh yes, and what do the stars say about the ZPZ tour?…
(If you prefer English instead of French, use this. By the way, if anyone finds the conclusion of all this, don’t hesitate to post here).

This Note’s For Neil

Warning: Neil Young Fan Entry Dead Ahead!

Spent all morning listening to the stream of Neil Young’s Living With War. What a motherfucker of an album. This is classic Neil. Imagine the joyously roaring guitars on Ragged Glory, add the grungy lyricism of Zuma, Sleeps With Angels, Mirror Ball and Greendale, throw in some lusciously direct lyrics, and you’ll get the idea. The whole album could well be the soundtrack to an imaginary protest march on the White House. Album of the year, as far as I’m concerned.

Update: downloadable mp3’s available here, until the album hits the shops.

NYC ZPZ Video

Here’s a little audio/visual taste of what we can expect from Zappa Plays Zappa, as recorded at the Jammy Awards last April 20. From the looks of it, the Dweez may be somewhat lacking in showmanship but by golly, he’s got the chops! I can’t wait to see these guys live in Brussels.

Toronto ’69

This week’s boot: Rockpile, Toronto Canada, May ’69. For you nitpickers out there (you know who you are) it may also have been the 5/19/69 Massey Hall gig, although the gig list seems to suggest otherwise.

This Note’s For You

Neil Young is set to release a new album called Living With War. The songs are — surprise! — anti-Bush / anti-war, and will be available as streaming audio on his site next Friday. There’s even a weblog:

This is about exchanging ideas… it’s about getting a message out. It’s about empowering people by giving them a voice. I know not everyone believes what I say is what they think. But like I said before.. ya know.. red and blue is not black and white.

Go Neil! But did you really need to get a myspace page?

Boinged

Ya know, in the past we’ve been metafiltered, linkfiltered, growabrained, powazeked, and now this: it ain’t Rolling Stone, but Burnt managed to have Boing Boing post my FZ vs PMRC Flickr set on their frontpage this morning. What’s next? Slashdot? Digg? :)
