Horrible Sound

Sound 101 is on a hunt for the worst sound in the world. The site also looks into musical dissonance, the science behind the aural horror of fingernails scraping down a blackboard, and provides an audio mixer to create your own horrible sounds. Great fun!

Sex Machine

There’s your regular marital aids, and then there’s this: DIY-sex machines.

The dildonics on display are not intended as artwork. The function comes first, and any design that results is coincidental. Most — but not all — lack the ironic message that pervades so much modern artwork. As a result, these inventions resemble a kind of folk art sculpted from the Home Depot palette.

The Museum of Sex has opened an exhibition dedicated to this “vibrant American subculture where sexual adventure, technological ingenuity, and heartfelt personal visions intersect.”

How’s Yer Bird?

So you know about this bird flu pandemic that we’re all preparing for, right? Turns out Donald Rumsfeld is a major stockholder in the company that patented the antiviral agent Tamiflu. Following Bush’s call to begin bird flu preparations, over $8 billion in emergency funding has been passed by the US Senate. Who benefits? Take a guess. The mind boggles.

Frank Zappa Makes 200 Motels

Holland Doc, an initiative of dutch VPRO TV, will be broadcasting a one hour film called “Frank Zappa Makes 200 Motels” on their website in the coming days (today, Saturday and Sunday to be exact). The site’s sort of messy to navigate and scarce in details, but you can view this film online by clicking on the “Links” section to the right. Scroll down the page to see at what times the film is scheduled.

The Problem

Have you heard the news that’s goin’ round here
The man in charge has got to go
Cause he dances round the problem – boy
And the problem is the man in charge you know

Prophetic words from J.J. Cale, wouldn’t you agree?

Spider The Tylercore

During the recording sessions, John Paul’s 5 year old younger brother (Tyler Petrucci,) came into the studio and said these words to Dan and Bob. “I’ve been trying to tell people this forever. Too young to live, too young to die. You will die forever, and ever. The sun will blow up and you will turn into a zombie. Forever.”

Five-year-old Tyler Petrucci whips it out.

Frappr Continued

Frappr’s killuglyradio map is now a permanent link in the sidebar. It’s been heaps of fun seeing the pictures and messages you lot have posted there. However, with the average of 700+ pageviews a day this site gets, 23 additions to the map in one day just doesn’t cut it. What’s with you paranoid lurkers over yonder? Yes, I’m talkin’ to you! Go on then, add your name and location (picture optional)!

Brother, where art thou?

Bozzio And The Metropole Orkest

Terry Bozzio has a new album out: Chamber Works, recorded with Holland’s classical Metropole Orkest. Ko Decloet, dutch radio-producer and friend of both TB and FZ:

I think this is an essential release in his total body of work – it shows him as an amazing performer, a highly individual composer, a Stravinsky fan, a wonderful producer and also, he is easy to work with. And on a more personal note, the fact that he can play doesn’t mean he isn’t cute!”

Has anyone had the chance to give the album a listen? I’d love to hear this one.

Greatest live gig of all time? Apparently it’s Queen at Live Aid, July ’85. Mmmmkay.

Clapping Music

Do you like Steve Reich? I love his works. Allmost all are the same (of course not true), but just beautiful. Recently I’ve found his homepage, and a video with “Clapping Music ” on it – from ’74. Again: I love it.
(This is the direct link for those who do not want to browse the homepage for some reason. You should. And please download the sample from “Music For 18 Musicians”. You’ll love it.)
