Thank you so much for this reminder to everyone Dr S. I for one shall never forget.

  2. xorg says:

What is it good for? It is good for frightening a large section of the electorate into voting for a right wing reactionary government!

I say bring the soldiers home and organize a singing contest between Bush and Al Zarqawi. Proposed obligatory piece: I Don’t Wanna Get Drafted. Optional: Suicide Chump.

Maybe I am being stoopid here, but are you seriously saying that Rememberance Day is good for frightening the electorate etc etc. Huh?? Nah, I can’t really believe that’s what you mean. Then again, maybe you don’t have an emotional involvement with the past, or at least are unaware of any such link; I do. My grandfather was wounded on the Somme, and my father found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time during the winter of ’44 (based at Spa…you work it out). I, you and all of us owe these people big time, like it or not. The fact that times have changed and you and I would probably never do what they did for any reason whatsoever is directly down to the fact that they did; our freedoms are down to them (and don’t kid yourself; unlike many people in this world of ours, we have choices) and we owe them BIG time. Thus we should never forget. Rememberance is personal and utterly apolitical. End of sermon :o)

Amendment: my granddad joined the resistance during WW II (after the belgian army surrendered) — was out plotting a bridge bombing while my grandma was back home keeping my dad safe from harm. At one point the front line lay right in front of their house. My other grandma risked her life on more than one occasion to get milk from the farmer for my mom. We must never forget these acts of bravery. Every day I pass by two allied WW II cemeteries on my way to work. I for one, will not forget.

I gather that yesterday, for the first time, there were no British WW1 veterans at the Remembrance service at Ypres. Time passes. But one day I will be there. It’s just something I have to do. One day…….

  7. xorg says:

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I was answering the question ‘War! What is it good for?’ I meant no disrespect to the victims.

  8. Magic Fingers says:

No probs xorg. I realized I had misinterpreted your comment (eventually)……see, I was being stoopid!
