Why am I not surprised:

The US government is developing a massive computer system that can collect huge amounts of data and, by linking far-flung information from blogs and e-mail to government records and intelligence reports, search for patterns of terrorist activity.

    It has been going that way for years. The information age is a double edged sword and an uneven system. Some countries filter what the citizens can see and others simply harvest everything that the citizens view.

    It’s the latest incarnatiomn of the Total Information Awareness debacle, which was originally run by disgraced Iran Contra felon John Poindexter, who got off on a technicality. It freaks the shit out of even most ardent republicans. they keep having to retool the PR, but we can be sure it’s not going away.
