Although I don’t speak German, I am gonna buy this book anyway 😉 It’s a good opportunity to start to learn a few words in German.

Well, it’s all in my head ;-). I did it to find out for myself mainly. There has been some discussion with my involvement over there at zappa.com, including the Buffalo bit:

Das Buch ist gedruckt und geht in die Auslieferung. Es hat “nur” 160 Seiten, dafür aber ein etwas größeres Format (30 x 36,5 cm). Es handelt sich nur um die offiziellen VÖs von Zappa, keine Bootlegs (Dafür gibt es schon umfangreiche Bücher).
Bei GRAND ZAPPA geht es im Kern um alle Regulars von FO bis CP3. Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Vinyls aus aller Welt. Reihen wie YCDTOSA sind zusammengefasst. Ein Anhang behandelt die CDs aus dem Nachlaß.
Verglichen werden auch die Masterings von Zappa für die CD mit den ursprünglichen Aufnahmen auf LP. Bei einigen Alben werden die verschiedenen CD-Masterings bewertet.
Insgesamt zeigt das Buch mehr als 1450 Abbildungen (alles in Farbe, auch die Weißmuster !!!). Davon 898 Etiketten (bspw. 64x HR) und über 300 Cover-Variationen. Interessant sind auch die Fotos von den verschiedenen Rillenquerschnitten (Radius A-Seite).
Außerdem: ein Vorwort von Ben Watson (Autor von Negatve Dialectic of Poodle Play), ein tolles FZ-Porträtfoto von Uwe Möntmann sowie einen exclusiven und sehr schönen Einband (unter dem Schutzumschlag) von Calvin Schenkel (Coverdesigner von WOIIFTM bis ZA und TTR). Die Einführung zum Thema ist von mir und beleuchtet diverse Aspekte aus Zappas Leben (u.a. Varese, Studio, Plattenfirmen, Prozesse, Spätwerk, unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen etc.).
Es gibt Anmerkungen und Hinweise zu vielen Einzelaspekten: Counterfeits, Tapes, CD-Reihen etc. Einen Text zur zappaschen Schallplattenherstellung weltweit. Jedes Album hat einen eigenen Einführungstext zu Musik, Aufnahme, Differenzen etc.
Außerdem wird ein kleines Geheimnis um das Läther-Album gelüftet und die ursprünglichen Inspirationen für das Weasels-Cover gezeigt. Insgesamt ist das Buch neben dem Dokumentarischen auch ein schöner Bildband zum Gesamtwerk.
Eigentlich ist GRAND ZAPPA das Buch, das ich mir gern zum 70ten vom Meister gewünscht hätte. Insofern empfehle ich es gern …
