Joe’s M’ssage

Joe Travers’ letter, on the audio-tracks of the new DVD – found on the Usenet group alt.fan.frank-zappa:

I’m sorry Mark, but it’s Dolby Digital. We originally were going to with PCM audio but we decided that we would go Dolby since we did not treat the audio in any way, nor remix. We went for picture quality instead. But when we switched the audio, the print work had already been completed.
That’s the story. We are planning on a special edition-type release with (hopefully) the full shows & all remixed in surround. The Nina Blackwood stuff should be on that.

Enjoy & thanks!!!
Joe

  1. A special edition type release, so everyone can buy it twice? No thanks. The sound on this edition is bullshit, and ZFT should eat it.

  2. Dear ZFT,

You have fucked up everything and alienated Zappa’s entire fan base. Please hurry up and go bankrupt so you can sell his entire catalog and vault to Warner Brothers. At least then Rhino will release the interesting stuff.

    “Chirp!” and You Suck,

    Birdman! himself

  3. OK.
    The Nina thing is faboulous.
It’s basically ‘ bout a man , a macho, making use of his powers. And , as I happen to be 54 now, I can say : many of my academic friends in the 80 & 90 ties used & abused FZ’s humor to chase women.
Something / somebody completely different: a 50 years old FZ , knowing that he doesn’t have that much time left ( people just feel it) says:

  4. The above letter might or might not be true, but anyway, this is again a proof that correct information is rellay necessary, when one releases something. Eh.

  5. The Blackwood interview is easy to find online. How many times can you watch it, anyway?

  6. Good grief. The ZFT comes up with another excellent official release, and everyone vows not to buy it. Do you think this will help the cause of getting them to put out more official releases? Grow up, folks.

  7. Well, it’s a nice item to sell at the ZPZ tour, that’s for sure, featuring Ray White and all. But basically, I’m not too picky about what they release. I stopped caring all that much many years ago.

Sounds good to me! Are you deaf?

  9. Who’s that J. Travers? I don’t know.
Not even a footnote, I guess.

    Just explore things.

Watch/ listen to the 50 years old FZ interview.
As a very young man ( +/- 12 years old) FZ discovered arabic music. Result, as it might have been the case for anybody armed with musical ears: it just opens your mind. You’re aware that much more is possible than the sounds & music you know about. You just start exploring things, the holistic way. While sticking to westren culture.

  10. By saying it’s bullshit, I mean, why not get it right the first time instead of releasing it twice – once with a stereo soundtrack, then a second time with a 5.1 soundtrack? Releasing basically the same thing twice is milking fans.

I imagine when they release the supposed “deluxe” edition it will have both shows. That I find even more annoying, as it will make this release completely worthless. I really enjoyed this DVD, but I have to question Frank’s song choice. 11 (!!!) of the tracks are from You Are What You Is. My guess is that “The Torture Never Stops” was intended to be a You Are What You Is promotion video. As it stands, it gives a very skewed impression of what both of these shows were really like. I certainly echo your question: Why not get it right the first time? Only I’m more concerned with the footage, not the sound (which already sounds great, in my opinion.)

  12. I would have preferred a complete version with 5.1 sound, too, but I’m sure that’s way further down the list (somewhere after Roxy). At least this is a legitimate, decent quality release!

  13. At last people are starting to see the true nature of the ZFT for what it is: money grubbing at the expense of a damn fine musician. I mean, more interested in picture quality than sound? For a concert? I know some folks over at Zappateers who could do a more excellent job. How long must we wait for a bona fide release that is up to Frank Zappa’s traditional audio standards? Or is it just going to be more of this piecemeal shit again and again?

  14. I have been a fan of F.Z. since 1971……and it would thrill me when a new record would hit the store….I remember heading for the local book store everyday hoping to see frank on the cover or featured in a music publication issue…..well…i am very saddened by the fact that the ZFT continues to hold all the so called “vault” material…..i thought Frank had soooooo many recordings of …music……well…where the hell is some of the unreleased material????? I for one care less for the them……anyway….for Franks sake….let’s play his music and enjoy what he did when he was with us…..damn…I miss him…..PEACE to all !!!!!!!
