Best FZ Covers: Battle of the YouTube Muffins, Or, Some People Like Cupcakes Better…

I’m really not certain which of these groups belongs in a compilation of best FZ covers – each has something different and unique in their version of Frank Zappa‘s Muffin Man that the other two groups do not. Give them a hearing and decide for yourself. MazMyth at LMCS Auditorium on January 9, 2009; Zappa Plays Zappa at Villa Arconati, July 15, 2008; or Pappa Plays Zappa at The Upperfloor (known as Stalloftet) in Hamar, Norway, August 3, 2008:

  1. Muffin Man must be hard, exciting and brutal to prove what he’s made of (or rather wants to be), and MazMyth deliver the dough here. Definitely worth a listen!

  2. I agree, Dark Clothes, MazMyth does “deliver the dough” as you say. I also very much enjoyed the guitar work done by the lead guitarist of Pappa Plays Zappa.

I once heard the criticism from the ZFT (and ZPZ) that these so-called covers of FZ were diluting FZ’s legacy. A bunch of hogwash really. Certainly they have the right to their opinion, yet I believe these live FZ covers do more to keep FZ’s legacy alive and well than the sporadically released CD or download. Zappa’s music is always at it’s best when presented in a live, spontaneous environment. Whenever a band plays Zappa, my ears certainly perk up.

Imagine a radio station that played only one artist, and besides the work of that one artist, played only authorized covers by an authorized cover band (and wants you to pay for preferred membership as well)…

  3. Mazmyth really does bring it home here. Does anyone know if they cover other FZ songs?

  4. If your gonna play Muffin Man you’d better be a good soloist with something to say, since this song is basically a jam.
