Status Back Baby

If you haven’t already, we still urge you to sign the petition regarding the ZFT’s recent “Aggressive Actions”. 1208 signatures at this time of writing — not too shabby for a petition that’s been online for 4 days, but the more the merrier, obviously. You’ll find yourself in the company of such illustrious names as Jon Naurin, Robert Kevorkian, Don Preston, Jimmy Carl Black, Nigey Lennon and Candy Zappa.
For those of you who wish to be kept abreast (now there’s a wonderful expression): there’s a direct link to the petition at the right of this page. See that little banner with Dr Sharl’s hand waving at you? Indeed.

Meanwhile, these litigations have been gaining interest on several weblogs who specialize in intellectual property and fair use. Couple of links:

Now, when people who are actually knowledgeable in this particular legal field begin to express their doubt as to the validity of the ZFT’s claims, that has to mean something, right?

In other news, a couple of new-ish DVD releases, available on Amazon:

How questionable are these? You tell me.

Boy, I sure hope the ZFT won’t crack down on Amazon.com! :D

  1. The petition: it’s full of Germans!!!!! :-)

the DVDs: I’ve found this about “Music In Review”:

Don’t buy it! I love Frank Zappa, but this thing is poor. If your just getting into zappa and want to learn more, dont buy it. If your a loyal zappa fan like me dont buy it. This is basically four very dull english guys talking about his albums all the way up to and including ‘aposrophe’. For a man that has released over 60 albums, thats hardly much information. On a very rare occasion there is a very short clip from an interview with the great man himself. I realy do fail to see the point in this dvd/book. I would advise someone thinking of buying this to buy the live dvd ‘does humour belong in music?’ which is superb, and check out one of his books.

  2.
Synopsis
A retrospective critical review of the music and career of American composer, musician, and film director Frank Zappa. Featuring in-depth analysis from industry insiders such as veteran music journalist Chris Welch, Zapper biographer Ben Watson, and Ian Fortnam of Kerrang!, Uncut and NME, plus musical highlight’s from Zappa vast back catalogue.
Oh no! Twatson! It’s SUCK THE FUN OUT OF FRANK TIME!

  3. I use to have a photo of the man with moustaches on my myspace page: it seems like the photo doesn’t show up no more and I have only the blank with the red cross inside…

  5. Just a thought- is there a list anywhere of Stuff That Is Probably In The Vault Even Though It Isn’t On Any Circulating Tapes We Knows Of? I am thinking of maybe, that there show Bongo Fury came from- though other dates on said tour are quite well-represented-or Burnt Weeny (there is a tape of this but it is more than terrible).

  6. Hi Clark – I dont think there is a list. Some of the Vault releases were well known before from AUD tapes (like Wazoo), while others was not recorded at all (as far as I know: Buffalo, OZ), though the tourtapes were circulating.

    Anyway, my list would be:

    – 1973 06 24 Sydney – The Best One!
    – 1974 spring – the 10th annyvers. tour
    – 1975 spring – (Bongo Fury leftovers)
    – 1975 sept, UCLA – the whole orchestral show
    – 1980 spring – (I tend to like this tour)
    – 1981 nov. 21, Champaign – the BEST from ’81,
    – 1988, a full show – I’d prefer one, better then the Best Band CD

Well, but I’m also ready for surprises. :-)

  7.
”The Dead Hand of Widows, including Zappa’s”

I found this fascinating blog by a guy who knows his stuff:

    http://williampatry.blogspot.com/2008/01/dead-hand-of-widows-including-zappas.html%5B/quote%5D

Though interesting reading, I found he didn’t add very much to the present discussion regarding Goil’s actions, just regurgitation of what has already been said elsewhere. It would be really interesting if a copyright lawyer could take the zft to task…

  8. Ummm…. We need to clean up the petition again. Check out the last page (1360) somebody is using a “bot” or some such thing to fill the petition with slurs about our beloved Francesco. Takes up two page of the petition. Los bastardos!

Some ppl have really learned little about the man, or his music, haven’t they, Jake?

  10. I would like a DVD of clips of songs the Bongo Fury tour, Fall’ 80 Tour and the Bianca years, but I doubt any footage exists of these bands apart from that one on Apostrophe DV of Bianca.
