Jean-Luc Ponty in 1972

Rare footage of Jean-Luc Ponty from 1972. Performing his only original composition from his album King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa. While the album version goes 7:12 in length, this version (it is surmised that this recording is from a German TV Archive – can anyone confirm this?) goes 10:13. Though recorded under the Ponty name, King Kong is largely considered a Zappa record by fans.

Band:

Jean Luc Ponty – violin
Philip Catherine – guitar
Jasper Van’t Hof – piano and organ
Peter Trunk – bass
Aldo Romano – drums
Nano Vasconcelos – percussion

  1. innarestin’ readin’ over at IBS news – apparently Moon thinks her Mom is a bitch, too…paranoia over Dad leaving for a groupie and financial bondage could mess a kid up.

  2. re: this Ponty clip – I can confirm each of the members of the backing band went on to successful careers as porn stars

I saw that quote over at IBS but decided against posting it here. I’d have to read Moon’s complete essay first. As it stands, we don’t know how in- or out-of-context this quote really is…

It’s good that they can pay their bills on time now!

Can you confirm if part 3 is up yet?

I see your point, Barry. It’s a very inflammatory extract to be sure. Before posting such material, one should have all ones facts checked first.

I’m on the look out for part 3, Sharleena, in between rather shaky takes of “George W. Does Dallas – The Prequel”.

  6. Just noticed that if you type “moon unit mom redefined” into a Google search box, the top hit allows you to read the whole essay there from google books. I suspect this may not be featured as a family publication on the official website.
Connection to Jean Luc Ponty clip … er, some of the events take place in 1972?

  7. Have read the essay and feel for both Moon and Gail. All Moon ever wanted was to have “normal” parents. Meanwhile, Gail was striving to not lose Frank to “some groupie”. Both of them seem to have ended up on bad terms as a result…

Is it any of our business, ultimately? I think not.

  8. If it sells books and MP3’s…and fancy potholders masquerading as knit caps. Wanna buy one?

  9. The google link doesn’t seem to work, maybe it’s a European thing?

I’m always in the mood for Gail-bashing, but this sounds like none of my business anyway.

Enter the term “moon unit mom redefined” at Amazon.com. When they present you with a title choice, there will be a image with a “look inside” arrow pointing to it. Click on it and follow the directions.

  11. This is the future of bookselling! You get to read the whole thing for free online, you don’t need to ever buy anything at all!

    A fairly miserable read. Fairly.

It’s not as though you get to read the entire anthology. By choosing Moon’s essay as the sample, the publishers are using a well-known media name to promote the book. It’s a win-win situation for both the publisher and Moon Zappa.
