Vai Contest, Return Of

The jury has done its business, the winners have been notified, and will be receiving their copy of “Western Vacation” shortly! Those of you who didn’t enter: buy the album via these handy links: iTunes | Amazon.

And now for the correct answers…

1. What series of guitars did Steve Vai help design?
Vai helped design his signature Ibanez JEM series of guitars.

2. Where did the phrase “Martian Love Secrets” (which Steve Vai morphed into the title of his 1995 album, ‘Alien Love Secrets’) actually come from?
“Martian Love Secrets” was written on the wall of the toilet in the men’s room at the Record Plant in 1970 where FZ first read it.

3. On which Zappa field recording does FZ introduce Steve Vai as Stephano Vai who “writes nice letters to his Grandmother in Italian and everything…” (Name venue, city, country, date)
Stadio Municipale, Pistoia, Italy, 8 July 1982.

Question three turned out to be a tricky one — only two readers managed to nail that one… Anyway, thanks to all who played!

  1. I’d like to thank my mom, God, everybody at KUR. I wouldn’t be here without you guys. Also I’d like to give a deep thanks to Steve Vai and everyone at Favored Nations, and last but not least I’d like to thank the big man himself Barry’s Imaginary Publisher!

  2. Yup it reminds Flexible/Zappa 80 sound/Reggae/XTC. Bob Harris sings on most of the tracks and there is a Tommy Mars scat track. Thanks a lot KUR!

I’m a big fan of late ’70s/early ’80s Zappa (aswell as all the other eras), so I might buy it! P.S. do any songs sound like ‘Teen-age Wind’, metafunj?
