From what I've heard of the orchestral albums, the LSO albums are my favorite so far. Despite Frank's unhappiness with some of it, I still get way into this album when I put it on. The Yellow Shark comes in at a very close second place for me.

From what I've heard of the orchestral albums, the LSO albums are my favorite so far. Despite Frank's unhappiness with some of it, I still get way into this album when I put it on. The Yellow Shark comes in at a very close second place for me.
Since i still don't have the LSO, Boulez nor 200 Motels (SECURITY!!!), i had to choose between Jazz and The Yellow Shark. I still have more feeling for Jazz From Hell...But i like to think of The Yellow Shark as the disc i'll listen to "when i'm 64"  Uncle Meat may be labeled as orchestral? I dunno, certainly it is not just an instrumental one... Thanks for the poll, NPR! |

This is a very difficult poll for me. I have reasons to love every single one of these albums. The only way I could come to a decision would be to say which is my least favorite and I would say that was LSO. Most of it just seems to drag along for me. It is possible I will change my mind one day on it. But the others area a big tie vote.

I must echo DebK's sentiment: this poll was difficult for me, as I like all the recordings listed...
But I chose the LSO as the favorite (followed very closely by the Yellowshark.
I am one who goes for that "human element" (yeah, the element with all the mistakes and problems) that does not come with the Synclavier pieces. And (again to echo DebK) yet it's easier for me to tell you which one I like the least, which would be 200 Motels - for the simple reason that I don't feel the work had 'evolved' enough. I know that a hatchet job was done on the movie and that's not what I mean here. I just think that the entire project would have been superior if done in the 80's instead if the 70's...

Similar reactions, Sofa, with just the opposite albums! 200 Motels, I rate that as highly as Jazz From Hell, Perfect Stranger and Yellowshark. As far as FZ's capacity as a composer and musician I do not see any developement over the years. I admit that I am no expert, but I can see developement in other artists, but not in FZ. He is fully developed from the beginning. All the elements of his music are there all the way through his career. I attribute this to the fact that he was composing chamber music and symphonies from his childhood. I love all the individual compositions on 200 Motels. The strange thing is, I can rarely play the cd set. There is almost too much there and it pounds at you relentlessly like the ocean after a while. The movie is brilliant, especially under the conditions it was produced. If it had waited till the '80's to be produced it would never have appeared at all! I love Janet's big dance number how the dancers are manipulated to move in time with the music. And the bored violinist number, no one could have said it better, musically and visually. Flo and Eddie put everything into the numbers along with the rest of the band. Ringo is great, very professional (hehe!). And he looks so much like Frank it's frightening. Theo Bikel acts completely out of his element (if that is acting) when he is not being a very incompetent Devil! I could go on and on (and I have!)......
The mind boggles at the philosophical implications!

I liked my old avatar better. It actually matched the "You're an asshole" quote. I lost the old one during the change. Now the new one says to me "Hi, I'm Frank." But I guess it'll work. My all time favorite Zappa photo is the one from Strange Things where he has the bowler hat on, a tape recorder, and he's just staring at you. I was considering it for a tattoo for a while, but decided against it. Well, I'm really blabbing now, so I'm gonna end this post. Goodnight.

Aw, you got rid of it! I agree it didn't go along with the title "You're an asshole". I love those pictures from London with the bowler, too. I did a drawing of him with the bowler that's posted on KUR. It's not the same one you were talking about, though. I just wanted to see if I could capture that totally pissed off look! I think I did! (hehe!) Good poll, by the way!

Thank you , I 'preciate it. That was what you call one of them planned accidents. I enjoyed playing with the way his hair is all over the place in some of the photos and I just applied that to the shadows on this drawing. It gives it more energy. If you are interested in purchasing the orginal, just let me know off list. I'm sure we could work a deal.
