Category Page restrictions
« on: May 06, 2005, 02:49:43 PM »

Categories provide automatic indexes, that are useful as table of contents. Apparently they are restricted to display "only" 200 items.

Thus when a category is large, there are multiple pages. The editable part of the page is repeated on each of the set of pages. "Articles" in the category are distributed over multiple pages, which is not a big deal. But somewhat confusingly, the "subcategories" are also distributed over multiple pages, which is somewhat of a problem.

It seems that the only way (known to mankind) to have all subcategories (up to 200) on the first page, is to use a suitable sort key in each, e.g. consisting of the name with a blank space in front...

Can anybody think of a more elegant solution to this issue?
Or: is it not an issue?

It seems to me that this is a bug in the current wiki-version. If you have multiple pages for one category, on page one it will list only a part of all the articles listed under it (for instance 6) and it will state on that page "there are 6 articles in this category", when in fact there are more (which you only find out when you go to the next page).

As for the subcategories: I wouldn't fiddle around with them just for display purposes. Don't forget this is open source software that is constantly in development - I'm pretty sure this problem will get fixed in a future version...
