Black Napkins has never failed to make the hair on various parts of my body stand up, regardless of which version. For me it definitely qualifies as a favorite. Personally I rate it higher than Watermelon which, to my taste, simply is not as intense. Many fans rate the Watermelon solo as their all time favorite - I say have another good listen to Black Napkins. The guitar will invariably sound urgent, raw and emotional - something one would not expect from The Guy Who Put The Sneer In Rock...

Favourite album for me would be One Size Fits All because of Napoleon Murphy Brock's voice and all those great songs. I'm also a big fan of You Are What You Is.
Favourite songs include Inca Roads, Florentine Pogen and Cosmik Debris.

Roxy Rules!

How about that solo on "Son of Orange County", great opening run.   Also Nappi and Gearge singing that great chorus, good stuff!

Chunga's Revenge.

Song? Currently Black Napkins(Deathless Horsie) from HALLOWEEN.

P.S. -Anyone remember the 1978 NYC show dates.
Was it 10/27 & 28 w/ 2 shows and then the big one?

I was at the big one. The long one.
2weeks before I was @ The Capitol Theatre show in NJ  where FZ walked off during the early show. Seeing the clip from that gig, he didn't seem to happy.

Thanks Folks.

Correct - and a single show on 10/29 ...

Check this great site

for details to each individual show of the 1978 Halloween series.

I first heard Zappa when a friend bought Zoot Allures back in '76 (I was 16 at the time and Ztoned an awful lot of the time), the moment I heard Black Napkins, I was sold.  Now, thirty years later, I am listening to some version of it while I right this, perfectly straight (we get wiser as we get older)... and I think I like it more!

Having heard maybe 10 variations on how Zappa's various bands have performed it over the years, this song never disappoints... whether the focus is on a plueglehorn solo, a ripping fiddle, the weeoooo's or Franks ripping guitar.  It just generates passion and emotion like very few other musical composures have done for me over the years.

Thankfully, I had the chance to hear it live back in 1977 at some miniature concert hall in central Michigan!

There is a lot more to listen to for me though... so I may discover something I like even more... although I can't imagine it!

Song: Big Swifty (Who would have guessed ?Grin)
Album:(This is a hard one)  well...as of now I would have to say Hot Rats

However, my Zappa collection, a grand total of 9 albums, is too small to give a final answer.

I must say that some of my all time favourite Zappa songs are:
- Drowning which (from YCDTOSA vol3.), The instrumental parts are so intense, complex and... I can't find words
- The ocean is the ultimate solution, fantastic guitar solo
- Filthy Habits, his best guitar solo??
- King Kong (especially from Freaks and Mother##$%)

But hey, I could continue for years. Really no use in such lists since there are so so so many good tunes to choose from.

Well, for prosperity's sake, the first one I picked up was Cheap Thrills, and it still does thrill me in a special place.

Favorite album has gotta be We're Only In It For The Money.

When it comes to songs, two of my all time favorites are: King Kong off of Disconnected Synapses, from 1970 in Paris with Jean Luc - I absolutley LOVE that jam - also, the Bwana Dik suite of songs from the Fillmore (second fav. album, followed by Hot Rats, Thing Fish, and Joe's Garage) - and I really dig Flo & Eddie.

If I had to pick one song, though, hmmmmm. . .I guess it would be. . .huy. . .typing and thinking at the same time. . .hard choice. . .hold on.

Two minutes later. . .torn between Muffin Man, Catholic Girls, Baby Take Your Teeth Out, Camarillo Brillo, Willie The Pimp, and Oh No. I cannot decide further than that.

What about your favorite collaborating musicians? Mine is without a doubt Ike.

I seem to go through stages of liking different kind of songs. And as I have gotten older I seem to lean more towards the instrumental songs.

I like King Kong.

I have 2 cds with nothing but King Kong on it. Its great for commuting(in traffic).Different versions, of course. Looking for more!      Grin
