...then I'll have 2 copies of Hot Rats, maybe I can convert someone else!
Now that is the right attitude! Go get 'em, tiger!
...so I'll soon find out what 'Band' is like!
BTW, I think you'll really enjoy TBBYNHIYL. The cover tunes are pretty good. "Stairway to Heaven" is great, featuring the Jimmy Page guitar solo played note for note by the entire brass section. There is an amazing version of Maurice Ravel's "Bolero."
These guys dish out some great performances of "Zomby Woof" and the Jimmy Swaggart bash-a-thon version of "Lonesome Cowboy Burt."
You'll love it.
It's a way of life.

Yep, I ain't afraid to tell people I know I like 'older' (only in their head) music, I say beefheart/zappa/zep/whatever, most of them think I'm barmy!
Mmm maybe get Lather first, but it doesn't matter much which I suppose. It's gonna be one of my next couple of purchases.
I heard about 200 motels, but the CD is hard to find/not good quality, is this right?
Thanks for the kindly welcomes! Tim

Heya..., Timmo: I heard about 200 motels, but the CD is hard to find/not good quality, is this right The CD is out of print. The quality is top drawer, although perhaps for the matured ear. Lots of orchestral stuff, as well as some great Mothers era rock. Strictly Genteel. You can get it on ebay for $20-25 U.S. Welcome to music appreciation class!!!

This is just an update really.. (if you care..) I went a bit crazy over the festive period (that's what it's for ain't it?!) and bought: `Zoot Allures` `Sheik Yerbouti` `Cheap Thrills` `Son of Cheep Thrills` [as well as some Stravinsky + Varése] & just today I've received threesome vol2, and am listening right now to `Waka/Jawaka` for the first time! The `Cheap Thrills` CD's are good for a beginner, which I suppose I still am even though I have over 10 zappa albums. you have a synclavier tune, and songs from pretty much each era, nothing from the original Mothers though I don't think? well there's the title song with the 80z add-ons. `Sheik Yerbouti` is so addictive, them mothers is crazy! `Zoot Allures` is great, I don't understand some criticisms I've read elsewhere. Listening to `The Grand Wazoo` this afternoon I love `Eat That Question` already, and that reety-alrighty tune.. I (you guessed it) love `It just might be a one-shot deal`! the lyrics are great. Oh yeah I did think TBBYNHIYL is superb, the bit/s frank plays just before the brass solo on Stairway is awesome. Frank Zappa vs the Mothers of Prevention intrigues me, I've read a positive evaluation of it on the Zappology site ( http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Mezzanine/7206), what are your opinions on it? Having just read No Commerical Potential, I enjoy Zappology more, because NCP doesn't really delve into the music or lyrics much, more the social aspects of things, and because the bulk of the book was written in 1971 with it being updated periodically, covering the rest in scant detail. Interesting none-the-less. Can you recommend any books which analyse the music more like the Zappology site?

Well, Timmo, if you're into the intense, deep-down-into-the-nooks-and-crannies type of analysis, you could always pick up The Negative Dialects of Poodle Play, by Ben Dover, erh, Watson! Ben Watson! This guy describes all sorts of connections between Frank Zappa's work and just about every important literary and philosophical work since the Iron Age. I myself have never read this book, but this just might be the thing you're looking for.
If I understand correctly, many FZ afficinados are divided about Watson's book. Dunno. Never read it.
I personally would rather read in TRFZB about how young Frank almost blew his nuts off.
I'd suggest participating in KUR's very own "Blue Light." That's the section of this site where we can discuss FZ's lyrics and the meanings / interpretations behind them. We probably need to wipe the dust and cobwebs away, but I'm sure it works perfectly.
Help put "anal" back into "analysis!"

Timmo -- Check your message box. Squirt: You would get SO much humor value and joke reference points from reading Ben Watson's comparisons between Apostrophe (') and King Lear, "Cheepnis" and Oedipus, etc. The guy really stretches it. It would be good for a few hilarious Lonesome Cowboy Squirt one-liners if you ever get around to checking it out.

Wasn't Roxy released in '74 and OSFA in '75, then it wouldn't be next album ?? Busted! You are indeed correct, Timmo. Bongo Fury was the next "actual" release by FZ. Was he speaking (writing) about that release in the liner notes? Your guess is as good as mine. FZ was well known for 'hinting' at future projects, that then never came to fruition. So I dunno if he meant BF in those notes or not... Thanks for calling me out on my error. I often try to go by memory when hanging in these forums and it don't always work. SOFA I think he did mean Bongo Fury in these notes. The two studio tracks ('Selected Studio Wonderment') "200 Years" and "Cucamonga" plus the first part of "Muffin Man" should be from the OSFA Sessions. Isn't Beefheart also featured on OSFA ?? (as BLOODSHOT ROLLIN' RED - harmonica when present)
