Okay Folks,
The qui - etude (heh-heh) at the Forums leads me to publish another "golden oldie". That's right, you heard right, I'm stooping to a 'classic rock block'. Two entries for your dancing and dining pleasure - no commercial interuptions!

818-pumpkin

Posted by Ryan on 8/24/2000.
Did Frank ever answer the 818 Pumpkin hotline number?

Posted by Frankie on 8/27/2000.
Dear Ryan,
Thanks for your question. Now let me ask you one. If you were the President and CEO of a corporation - no matter how small - would you answer the phone???
To the best of my knowledge, no human has EVER answered the Pumpkin Hotline...
Thanks for writing,
Frankie

You're reading classic rock at KKUR, where we're in the middle of a classic rock block!

The Real Frank Zappa Book

Posted by michael on 8/25/2000.
What do you think about Zappa’s autobiography? Do you know under which circumstances he wrote or collected the material in it?
Good vibrations!
Michael.

Dear Michael (may I call you Mr. Kenyon?),
Just kidding Michael!

: What do you think about Zappa’s autobiography? :
I think it should be required reading for any course in political science, economics, or music appreciation, taught anywhere in the world. I think a copy belongs on every coffee table, and in every bathroom reading rack, in these here United States. I think it should be made available in both a King James and Revised Standard Version! (Rant, rave, spew)
It’s a fun read...

: Do you know, under which circumstances he wrote or collected the material in it? :
Under extreme duress... Actually, it was written in hope of setting the record straight on a number of points regarding the life and music of Frank Vincent Zappa Jr. Notice that I didn’t say to report the truth; I said to set the record straight. I think it does so quite eloquently... What do you think?
: Good vibrations! Michael. :
Actually, “Vegetables” (an outtake from the “Smile” sessions) is more appropriate to this forum, but I like the Beach Boys too.
Fun, fun, fun!
Thanks forwriting,
Frankie

i can't remember the exact date, but it would have been sometime in late 1986.  i dialled 818 pumpkin (from sydney, australia) to see if there were any kinds of tshirts available. this was pre-web and i found out about the number from one of the inserts in a ryko fz cd. anyway, sorry to say fz did not answer the phone, but a very amiable and helpful woman did, and said she'd mail me a few pamphlets etc. i asked if fz ever came into the office, and she said rarely. i grilled her about all sorts of stuff (its my job to do that anyway) and i then asked her what he was like as an employer. she laughed and said that was an interesting way to describe her husband.

To the best of my knowledge, no human has EVER answered the Pumpkin Hotline...

Does this mean that you had some rare somnambulant amnesiac call now before it's too late type syndrome.

Naw, Bert, it means for years we had a very stone-age type phone system set up. I answered MY phone... The patches would occasionally get mixed up, so yeah I guess I did accidently take some calls not intended for me. I don't recall ever 'manning the phones', but that doesn't mean it didn't happen...
But, when we were suddenly "under-staffed", there was a temp service we'd contact. Not exactly rocket science, answering the phone and filling out orders, eh?
I didn't make a habit of answering the phone, unless I was standing right next to it - and would look like an ass if I didn't.
There was also a certain amount of "tongue-in-cheek" in that old post too. So lighten up; unless you'd like to apply for the job...
Since you're such a researcher, maybe you could get in touch with the nice gentleman who wrote that article and ask which # he called... Betcha it was NOT 818-PUMPKIN.
