Hello, Please forgive the intrusion in your activities. I'm a bit new to the computer, and to Frank Zappa. I'm intrigued by his music though and I'd like to learn a bit more about it. My estimate is that the best way ti learn more is from others who listen and appreciate it. I have subscribed to a list at Yahoo that looks promising. I'm wondering if there are other places? My son mentioned something to me about a newsgroup (I was too embarrassed to admit I didn't know what that was). Can anyone suggest where I might go to learn more about Frank Zappa? Thank you, cs

Thank you, cs Hey there! Look, I think the best way to know more about Zappa is listening to his music, even before knowing other people's experience about it...Do you have any discs available? You can download some MP3 or RA files with your puter if you don't... There are excellent sites available if you want "information" about the guy. Groups are gonna help, but not if you haven't listened any of the stuff. You'll be out of context i'm afraid. Barry's KUR site contains lots of information; this one: http://killuglyradio.dreamhost.com/thebignote/index.phphas audio files you can download and also news and funny stuff related. You can also go here: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/umrk/for more audio files to experience. Or here: http://w1.858.telia.com/~u85821131/for lots of info about the guy. Hope this was helpful. Good luck on your journey! sharleena

My estimate is that the best way to learn more is from others who listen and appreciate it. I have subscribed to a list at Yahoo that looks promising. I'm wondering if there are other places? Actually, the best way to learn more is to listen to the music but, having read your post to Frankie, if you're on a tight budget, I understand you reluctance to charge into this unarmed. Sharleena gave you some excellent webpages to try; definitely check them out... My son mentioned something to me about a newsgroup (I was too embarrassed to admit I didn't know what that was). I, personally, have had a very bad experience with the major Zappa newsgroup - AFFZ (alt.fan.frankzappa) - so I won't recommend them. The basic problem with a news group is the size; there are too many members, all wanting to say something, to pay much personal attention to you. I'd bet your request for help there would net you only laughter... There are a number of Groups at Yahoo that cater to the Zappa inquisitive (you mentioned that you applied to one; why not apply to several?), I'm sure you will find a sympathetic ear at one of them. Or, you could take your chances here. Barry has been hard at work, making this forum a place where any Zappa Fan can spill there guts. Maybe we could help... I read your post to Frankie at Hotplate; I think it's pretty good advice - considering what you own and what radio you listen to... I'd add "Make a Jazz Noise Here" - but that could be next in line. I hope you continue your Zappa experience. Asking questions of other fans is good - but, nothing beats personal experience. We can't tell you what you will like, only what we like. The neat thing about Zappa is he wrote in so many different styles that something is bound to appeal to you. Good luck, cs. I hope our paths cross again someday. SOFA

Thank you - both of you. I have seen 'The Big Note' web page, and have explored it a little. And the others I will investigate more thoroughly as time allows. I'm curious now. I noticed both of your nicknames at the aforementioned web page, and the person who contacted me from the group to which I applied (also called 'The Big Note') was calling himself SOFA. Is this an unlikely coincidence, or are you all the same people? What about the other 40+ Groups I found at Yahoo? Do you belong to all of them too? Oh that's silly, you couldn't belong to all of them - could you? cs

Is this an unlikely coincidence, or are you all the same people? Heh-heh... Busted cs; yes, Sharleena and I are both members of TBN. We've been discussing your application all weekend. Keep your fingers crossed... Worse case scenario, cs, we can help you thru these boards (I don't think Barry, or the KUR Team would mind). SOFA

SOFA[/color] Well the KUR Team and myself in my capacity of Bogus Temporary KUR CEO had a meeting just yesterday (gotta love meetings on Sundays), during which we decided we would'nt have any problem with this kind of online educating through our boards. In fact: that's what they're for!
