Manx Needs Women
« on: March 19, 2003, 02:59:20 AM »

some info I found on donlope/fz/songs:
FZ's intro from The Palladium, NYC, December 28, 1976 (contributed by Jon Naurin):
"This song used to be called 'Mars Needs Women', but since Bozzio went to The Gilded Grape, sort of a modification (?) in the social life, where he became very impressed with the M.C. - it's not just Punky's picture that's influencing him, you understand - Terry has fallen under the magic spell of the M.C at The Gilded Grape, a man, a great man and a great M.C, right up there with Don Pardo, a man that we have named Manx...his real name is Timothy, but we call him Manx, because of the way his hair is cut."

Okay, so I've become curious about this Manx character.

1. He apparently worked as an M.C. in "The Gilded Grape", a "modification in the social life" (?) where T. Bozzio got impressed with him... What kind of place was "The Gilded Grape"? Why, and howso "impressed"?

2. His real name is Timothy, but he's dubbed "Manx" because of his haircut. Just what type of haircut does one have to sport in order to be dubbed "Manx"?

3. Why does Manx "need women"?

"Just what sort of haircut does one have to sport in order to be dubbed Manx"

The word Manx relates to characteristics, inhabitants and langugae of the Isle Of Man. It can also relate to a breed of cat which is believed to have originated there (it's short-haired and tailless). The administrative centre of the Isle Of Man is a town called Douglas and the symbolic device for the the Island is three joined legs.

There is also a bird called a Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) which has long slender wings and black & white plumage.

OK, get the picture ?
So, this guy "Manx" his real name was Douglas Shearwater, he had a strange sort of black 'n' white mullet sorta hairdo without the tail at the back and little skinny Ted was impressed by his third leg  Wink.

Offering up an opinion once more, I'd wager that the Gilded Grape is "the Grape" referred to in 'Broken Hearts are for Assholes', which - if you follow the text of that one - would make it a gay bar.
Terry Ted and homoeroticism made their debut with Punky. Obviously, TT found Tim's rictus even more succulent.

My guess is that combed up flat top ala Vanilla Ice that was so popular right around that time - remember, kids, this is only an opinion.

Why does Manx "need women"?

For probably the same reason Tommy Mars need(ed) woman - to prove "he's not gay; no no no, he's not queer."

Or not...

BTW . . . There's This Really Bad Sci-Fi Movie Called "Mars Needs Women." Probably No connection to the FZ song, but anyway . . .
Also: On My "Zoot Allures live" bootleg, FZ reffers to the song as "Mars Needs Yo' Mama" (this is because some asshole in the audience shouted at Bianca Odin to take her clothes off while she tried to sing "You Didn't Try To Call Me", and Bianca responded: "You Tell Yo' Mama To Take Her Clothes Off! And After That You Go Tell Her To Suck A Rat's Dick!" At The End Of "You Didn't Try To Call Me," Zappa says "Don't tell her to take her clothes off anymore. She's got so many 'Yo Mama' Jokes that you wouldn't believe . . ." and announces the next song as "Mars Needs Yo' Mama")

wait.... Terry Bozzio was gay?  I was wondering what all those homosexual refrences in 'Broken Hearts are for Assholes' were about
'And so you worked the wall with Michael, wich gave your back an awefull strain'

'And so you kissed a little sailor, who had just flown in from Spain'

and so on and so forth.  Well, things make sence now.  ok......

*wanders off in sort of catotonic haze....*
