Worst Band Ever
« on: October 25, 2002, 12:08:15 PM »

A thread in the Zappa.com board that would have well fitted here:
http://www.zappa.com/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1035155522
Worst band ever if you ask me? Modern Heart... (yuk, yuk!)

Really, this a tough one...
Well TBNSlappy tells it straight: "Now, if this thread were entitled "bands whose music I hate the most", it might be a little more accurate."
Because: what does WORST BAND EVER exactly stands for? Quality of music?  Life attitude? Musical skills? It seems to me this is more about personal tastes than any other thing...
At the beginning i was going to say, for instance, Scorpions. I don't really like Scorpions (it's not about the genre, i like metal, etc) but they seems to me like the kings of bad taste, in terms of music. But, can i say they are the worst ever?? Can i say they "sounds bad" or something the like? All i can say is I don't like them. The same goes for example with Roy Orbison: i can't stand when they play Pretty Woman on the radio! But that's just me!! I can't say the guy sings bad!
On the other hand, some people lists Led Zeppelin or The Police or Jethro Tull as WORSESTS BANDS EVER! C'mon, are you kidding me? What is it exactly what they consider to list those that way? It seems to me that mentioning those kinda bands there is a bit snob, a bit regarding to what an orthodox zappafan "should dislike"... Get me?

Really, music is hit-and-miss with anyone, and even with that people change their minds. I can tell you a sure thing, nothing fulfills me quite like Zappa... But remember that there are people that get orgasmically excited when listening to Vince Gill, i never liked... vince gill.

come on people the worst band ever has to be g.g. allin and the scumfucks.  weird enough g.g. allin and the scumfucks are the best punk band ever. but we were talkin about music and not fashion, right?

Iīd say itīs a toss-up between the Osmonds and the Kelly Family.  Although, the more I think about it, the more I realize there probably isnīt enough space on the server to list all the truly bad bands. Thereīs a new one sprouting up every week.

The Sanford-Townsend Band.  Had a "hit" of sorts in '77 with a little atrocity called Smoke From A Distant Fire.  They opened for Heart's Little Queen tour at the Capital Centre in DC that year.  Abysmal.  Bunch of dumpy guys in their 30s who wore Hawaiian shirts and acted like rockstars despite their PAINFULLY obvious identity as a beach bar band.  I still cringe to remember it.  Not only did they fail to elicit cheers, their set ended to virtually no applause, and I swear it lasted an overlong 5 seconds.

They were Pablo Cruise wannabes, if that tells you anything.

Oh, that reminds me.  Pablo Cruise, too.  (pardon me, the memory is inspiring a hurl response....)

Great googlymoogly -- how could I possibly forget?

ANGEL!!!!!

One day I'll regale you with the story of the $1.01 Angel concert.  Suffice it to say their overblown (and REALLY expensive) stage set/presentation/antics made Spinal Tap seem powerfully intellectual, avant-garde and deeply profound.  At $1.01, I paid way too much, yet it was strangely....priceless.  An experience for the ages.

As a true Canadian I am supposed to be proud of our home grown talent.  Ususally I can wave the flag, but after watching Shania Twain stumble through a lip sinc during the half time show of the Superbowl, wearing a Darth Vader-ish frock, I hope that George W. doesn't bomb us in the great white north.
I have to give honourable "bad band" mentions to Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, Platinum Blonde, Circle Jerks, and Katrina and the Waves. Tongue

Yeah, Sharl, I get you.
Case in point:
Scorpions I'm not a fan, but I've heard them - maybe even like one or two tunes.
Vince Gill the same is true here.
the Osmonds This one's almost too easy, but I'll tell ya, before Donny was brought into the group - when they were still the Osmonds Quartet, those boys were hot shit. I'm talkin late 50's/early 60's here.
In the Donny era, I purchased "Crazy Horses" by the Osmonds, a 45 RPM, in 1974. I wish I still had it...

HANSON!! I am not ashamed in the least to say that I bought their first CD for my then 10-year old daughter. That CD now resides in MY collection...
Pablo Cruise, too. Slap, would you be shocked if I confessed that I remember most of the lyrics to "(What you Gonna do) When She Says Goodbye"? No, I haven't listened to Pablo Cruise in 25 years. But worst band? Then again, I went to a Kalapana concert, and had a good time...
ANGEL!!!!! I'm quite sure that I owned their initial release at one point. I don't recall any of it. Worst band ever? Naw.
(BTW, speaking of Angel, I hear Barry is fond of plaster in a wrist array...)

Shania Twain There's no shortage of hatred for Shania here. I have no opinion... I liked her first recording.
Ya know, FZ said, "If you like it, it's bitchin'. If you don't like it, it's shitty." Well, that about sums it up, don't it?
I'm talking about the music... Music is the best! I've heard a few bands that I could call the worst; but, I bet you all haven't heard of them. They weren't famous for a very good reason; they had nothing to offer. I've also heard a couple of aggragations that FZ would have enjoyed in his living room... They weren't famous either. But they had something to offer.
It's all too subjective to say what's best and what's worst.

I couldn't agree more.  Remember, I'm the "TBNSlappy" referred to by our Sharleena near the top of this thread -- it is, indeed, subjective.

No, not surprised that you have a bit of Pablo Cruise in your closet.  (It's OK -- I won't tell anyone outside this little world....)  Everybody has their guilty pleasures and dirty secrets.  For me, it's Foghat, Black Oak and Brownsville Station.  I can't help it -- when Smokin In the Boys Room comes on, the volume just gets cranked.

But I have to say this:  if you had seen Angel on that tour, I guarantee you'd agree with me.  You know the scene in Spinal Tap where they come out of the cocoons?  That idea came from Angel's show -- the cheesy narration, the half-assed pretentiousness.  Slight variations in equipment, but it was the same ineptitude.

Yeah, of course it's subjective.  Pretty much everything that's posted here is subjective.  I think I hear ol' Billy the Mole-Hill growing again.  I'm assuming the idea here is to have a little fun with the concept.  I couldn't describe well enough how much I chuckled when I read about Slappy's enlightening evening with ANGEL.

Everybody has their guilty pleasures and dirty secrets.

Oh yeah!  Here's my biggest skeleton in the closet:  KISS!  I must have about 10 or 11 Kiss LPs in my collection.  I bought 'em all when I was between seven and ten years old.  Sure, they're cheesy.  Sure, they're posers, but at least they have a sense of humor about the whole thing, and they do have something to offer: ENTERTAINMENT.  Now and then I'll put one of those boogers on the turntable for a spin and have a good laugh.  Still, there are a couple of cool guitar riffs on those albums.  (insert banging head here) Duh-nuh-Nuh-nuh-Nuh-nuh-Nuh-nuh!!!

As I remember, the mention of Kiss REALLY brought out the bonehead insults in that Z-com thread.  I can relate, tho -- I bought the first Kiss album when I was 16, the day after they appeared on the Mike Douglas Show.  (I guess my teenage fascination with the glam bands qualifies as a guilty pleasure....I never did the style thing -- well, other than my 5-inch white patent leather stacks that I wore until they fell apart -- but if they wore makeup and glitter, I was interested.  Bowie, Mott, T-Rex, Queen, Slade, the Dolls -- those guys gave me many rockin' smiles.)  Once I got to be 18 or 19, I moved on to other things and left Kiss and their cartoon pursuit of the kiddie market behind -- but I still smile when I hear ANY of that big dumb riffage from the first 4-5 albums.

Now THERE'S a band name:  Big Dumb Riffage.

Same here - actually a few months prior to the MD Show... I remember the first listen. Ya know how Black Diamond has the ritard at the end with the fade out? My LP had a skip right there. Now I was admittedly stoned during that listen, but I swear I sat there waiting for Black Diamond to end for a half an hour, before I realized it was skipping...
LOL!
Great album.
