The Tubes – White Punks On Dope

This video of “White Punks On Dope” taken from the extremely rare 1981 Japanese Laser Disc The Tubes produced is a fantastic collage of audio and visuals from 1981 and 1975. Check it out.

Mike Cotten is still compiling material for his Tubes documentary, Jamez. How he is ever going to edit it all into a movie is really going to be a feat. I imagine the documentary has become somewhat of a monster. Given the compiled material, so far, there is at very least multiple parts to this documentary…

Given the enormity of archive video material that even hardcore Tubes fans didn’t know existed until recently, this’ll definately be one movie you’d give your right arm to see! I am looking forward to it. Any news of a new Tubes album? I highly recommend the ‘Mondo Birthmark’ CD of 70’s demos that was released a few years back.

  3. I sure hope it spends a lot of film time on the ’70s stage show. I saw their US tour that immediately followed the legendary UK shows that comprised their Live album. It was the most singularly depraved organized spectacle I’ve ever witnessed, and no matter how I try and describe it to folks who weren’t there, I fall short.

Really, they were astounding in every conceivable way. But financially supporting a venture of such sheer size was always going to be a lose-lose proposition, I guess. I’m just glad I had the chance.

Looking forward to the doc, whenever it gets finished.

It’s likely that Scorcese’s George Harrison doc will see the light of day sooner, so I’ll have to be content with that for now…..

Like you, Jamez, I pick up every new Tubes album that is released, including Mondo Birthmark. Myself, though, I highly recommend Genius of America – it has the sound and the feel of Remote Control (Tubes at the top of their form) before David Foster diluted their legend and spectacle for a quick buck.

Genius of America and Love Bomb are probably the only Tubes albums I don’t have, Urban. I agree on Foster – he should have left their quirkiness alone and not blanded out the music. However, I’m a big fan of Alice Cooper’s From The Inside which was produced by him, so I don’t dislike him as a producer – it’s just I think they should have stuck with Todd Rundgren (especially since I’m a big Todd fan!) he would have given them a commercial edge while retaining their musical and lyrical brilliance, as he did on Remote Control.

P.S. Speaking of Todd, can you do a post on Utopia?

Not so glad that they’re taking over the forum totally, though.
