Zappa Chiptunes

Check out 8bitcollective:

We love chiptunes. We want more people to make chiptunes and we want more people to listen to chiptunes. That’s why anyone can upload or download their chiptune-related media at 8bc.org.

What’s a chiptune?

A chiptune, or chip music, is music written in sound formats where all the sounds are synthesized in real time by a computer or video game console sound chip, instead of using sample-based synthesis […]

Here’s Peaches En Regalia, done the Chiptune way:

  1. The way I see it, barry, this could be a very dynamite handheld videogame!

  2. The way I see it, Barry, these chiptunes can be the soundtrack for a possible interactive nightmare involving being chased by a very large industrial vacuum cleaner that looks like a chrome piggy bank with marital aids stuck all over its body that can speak Belgian. Oh, my God, here it comes now!

  3. GOD! “Black Page” REALLY sounds like I could be looking for Zelda in the forrest!!!

  4. That was interesting, not something I could listen to all day though. Inca was probably the best. Maybe wingtip will comment here on something outside the fringe of ZPZ comprehension!

  5. Certainly different, anyway. I’d like to see some tracks off Jazz from Hell done this way, that might be cool.

  6. And finally The Retard Version of The Black Page did appear… I expect the 7″ inch vinyl to be released presently, dedicated to Baby Food Stuff and retarded on both sides.

    Alex, is that you???

    … or “Amnerika” 😉

  9. Alex who?

This is where the retarded business came from – those chiptunes fulfilled that sarcastic post I had over there.

I guess Francesco Zappa is a kind of proto-chiptune thing, but Ocker wanted it more varied and natural, and so do I.

There is possibly a scientific excuse for these cruel sound artifacts, but other than that they’re just annoying.

To my ears, they don’t even qualify as sacrilege.

These are chiptunes — these constitute an FZ tribute lovingly crafted by a bunch of gaming geeks who love old school gaming, as well as FZ’s music. Now, you can like the way these tunes sound or not — but remember that they were made out of sincere love for FZ. This is a subculture that you obviously do not grasp (which is fine), but it would be nice if you could recognize for yourself that you do not know this subculture. It is so easy to put down other people’s efforts. Let’s see you actually put something online… and have the rest of us criticize it.

    Nope.

The name’s DiBlasi. (Dramatic pause) Alex DiBlasi.

I put words online, and you are free to criticize them…

Do I have to have full grasp of everything I criticize? In that case I would be an oracle, not a participant in a discussion.

Feel free to convince me to change my opinion, but so far I just don’t like the sound of these versions.

I don’t mind if you do.

  13. Since no one asked – and this is the Internet – I like them just fine. Makes me wonder what a FZ-centered NES game would be like.

Anyone remember an NES game called ‘Blaster Master’? That one had bitchin’ music.

  14. Don’t remember blaster master, but remember Randall Cunningham and Reggie White in Tecmo Bowl, oh the hours wasted. These crack me up.
