{"id":3861,"date":"2008-02-11T18:21:13","date_gmt":"2008-02-11T17:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.killuglyradio.com\/hot-poop\/2008\/02\/11\/throttling-the-mother"},"modified":"2008-02-11T21:13:10","modified_gmt":"2008-02-11T20:13:10","slug":"throttling-the-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.killuglyradio.com\/hot-poop\/2008\/02\/11\/throttling-the-mother","title":{"rendered":"Throttling The Mother"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s Guardian Online Arts edition: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.guardian.co.uk\/music\/2008\/02\/throttling_the_mother_of_inven.html\">Throttling the Mother of Invention<\/a>, wherein columnist Owen Adams writes about GZ&#8217;s &#8220;lengthy campaign against those who ride on his <i>[FZ&#8217;s &#8211; ed.]<\/i> memory&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Her recent ire was directed against a laughably bad fans&#8217; monument in the east of Germany.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wonder what&#8217;s more laughably bad:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A statue of FZ, financed by FZ fans in his memory<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.PetitionOnline.com\/mod_perl\/signed.cgi?ZFT&#038;1\">petition<\/a> opposing the agressive legal actions by the ZFT &#8212; signed by some 2070 fans at this point of writing<\/li>\n<li>The ZFT prohibiting us from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.killuglyradio.com\/hot-poop\/2008\/02\/02\/gunpoint\">using 100x100px  artwork thumbs<\/a> in our discography<\/li>\n<li>A ZFT endorsed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.killuglyradio.com\/hot-poop\/2007\/08\/08\/kill-ugly-radio-the-beer\">Kill Ugly Radio beer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A ZFT endorsed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.killuglyradio.com\/hot-poop\/2006\/08\/16\/freak-out-ale\">Freak Out Ale<\/a><\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zappa.com\/\">official FZ site<\/a> where valuable information is deemed secondary to flashy, incomprehensible, impenetrable animation<\/li>\n<li>ZFT Newsletters that prefer to cast aside factual clarity in favor of poorly written pseudo FZ speak (&#8220;the frost is on the pumpkins!&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> I&#8217;ll just leave that choice up to you. Moving on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What would Frank think of this barrage of lawsuits against people who just want to keep his memory alive, enraged fans wonder? My guess is he&#8217;d approve. He was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samizdata.net\/blog\/archives\/2006\/06\/samizdata_quote_33.html\">self-proclaimed capitalist-libertarian<\/a> like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ronpaul2008.com\/\">Ron Paul<\/a> with a history of lawsuits to regain control of his music.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>My<\/em> guess is FZ would <em>recognize<\/em> the efforts of these tribute bands\/fan sites and value them for what they attempt to achieve: to keep his music alive. Sure, he was adamant about keeping control over his own music, and rightly so &#8212; but in this case we&#8217;re talking about FZ vs Big Record Companies\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 and unscrupulous bootleggers looking to make a fast buck. <a href=\"http:\/\/projectobject.com\/\">Project\/Object<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/zappanale.de\/\">Zappanale<\/a> et all can hardly be categorized as such.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Surely you can&#8217;t accuse a band playing such obtuse music as Zappa&#8217;s of being only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockandrollreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/zappaonlymoney2s.jpg\">in it for the money<\/a>?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To ask such a question is to answer it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Myself, I&#8217;d much rather hear a Zappa-informed act like the Spinto Band than a huddle of Zappa acolytes recalling Brown Shoes Don&#8217;t Make It and Why Does It Hurt When I Pee. Somehow, the Mother of Invention is the only one capable of making profane songs sacred.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The issue at hand is not about what any given Zappa fan would <i>like to hear<\/i> &#8212; it is about the alleged illegality of grassroots fan sites and small time tribute bands. It is about whether such litigation, should it ever come to court, would even hold ground.<\/p>\n<p>In all: a poorly informed mish mash of an article, Mr Adams, if you don&#8217;t mind my saying so. You, Sir, are terminally clueless. Admit that, at the very least.
