It was basically a concert featuring Cucamonga-based musicians from the old days and Zappa-influenced bands from today interspersed with interview footage from the upcoming documentary. The whole evening’s festivities were filmed for inclusion in the documentary as well.

Paul Buff was given a few citations from the Mayor of Cucamonga and proceeded to drop one on his way off the stage. Hahaha!! He’s a very humble, unassuming guy—seems really cool.

A huge thrill for me was seeing The Definiens Project play “Big Swifty.” It just warmed the cockles of my heart to see a bunch of 20-somethings play FZ classical!!!

Another highlight was some interview footage with Paul Buff—he mentioned that he taught Frank about recording techniques and Frank taught him about music.

There was also some interview footage with Roy Estrada, Don Preston and Motorhead, but the best quote came from Don Preston. I’m paraphrasing: “It’s like an IQ test. If you like Frank’s music, you’re smart. If you don’t like it, you’re dumb. So go ahead—buy a Frank Zappa album and see if you’re smart or stupid.”

I’m sure I’m forgetting other stuff—but this is all off the top of my head. It was a fun evening and I’m glad I went. The documentary looks pretty good—I can’t wait until it’s done.
