Props to Evaristo for having found “the hidden link between Zappa and the Tropicalia Movement”. The article in question has Rogerio Duprat reminiscing his encounter with FZ in Darmstadt — way back in 1962! Any Portuguese readers that can translate for the rest of us?

Zappa was never in Darmstadt in ’62. I’m sorry, but the whole point of Zappa is that he could be the composer he was without having been there, without having been ‘trained’ etc.
The rumors of Frank having been in Darmstadt, having studied with Stockhausen, etc. etc. have been floating around for years. They’re BS (bullshit), and they miss the whole point. The point of Zappa is that ANYBODY, theoretically, can do what he did.
