    Zappa

Barry Miles schreef een biografie van Frank Zappa. Hij noemt onze held onder meer a cold nihilist. Eerst hoofdstuk: Zappa. Recensie door (even cold) Camille Paglia: The New York Times > Books > Sunday Book Review >Freak Out!. Veel over onze held in deze barre tijden op The Official Frank Zappa website.

  2. well. I am sure that if those kids sing the song, the USA will drown in chaos and revolution, islam will take over the western world, we will all be stoned to death – the end.

i guess good ole bob is under investigation, too? Maybe it’s time to watch “masked and anonymous” again ….

  3. Controversial band gets through ‘War’
Members say their intent was ‘misunderstood’

Still sweaty from performing, Allyse Wojtanek received congratulations from her friends in the lobby at Boulder High School. Perspiration had run Allyse’s thick black eyeliner into her bright green eye shadow after she poured her emotions and voice in the lyrics of a song that has erupted into controversy.

Allyse and other high school band members performed their punk rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War” at Friday night’s talent show.

Their song aroused national controversy earlier in the week, drawing U.S. Secret Service agents into their school on Thursday and television news vans into their parking lot.

Some students and parents alleged that at a rehearsal, altered lyrics in the Dylan song advocated killing President Bush. Band members denied the accusations.

They changed their name from “Taliband” to “Coalition of the Willing” before the talent show.

“We were misunderstood,” Allyse said after the show and in between talking with her friends. “People thought we were like communists, and that was not it at all. We have a peaceful message.”

There were no Secret Service agents at the high school Friday, Principal Ron Cabrera said.

However, the commentators for the talent show joked that they could be in the audience and poked fun at television reports for sensationalizing events at their school.

Lon Garner, a special agent from the Secret Service, confirmed earlier Friday that agents had visited the high school on Thursday. He said the investigation is ongoing.

“We are very sensitive to the First Amendment rights, but we still have to investigate allegations of threats, regardless,” Garner said.

Band member Brian Martens, a senior, said he did not understand the hoopla and controversy surrounding the song.

“The show went exactly how we rehearsed it,” Brian said.

There were just a couple of technical glitches, he said. War scenes were supposed to roll in the background, but crews forgot to rewind the tape and an image of the American flag remained behind them while they rocked the stage.

The music is political, Brian said.

“We think that the war we are involved in is wrong, and that people need to come to their senses,” Brian said. “That’s what our music is about.”

Analise Nelson, a junior at Boulder High, joked that students at her school want fake IDs so they can vote.

Analise’s band, “Down with Rhonda,” a group of six students that got together almost a year ago, also romped around on the stage performing at the talent show.

“I think a lot of kids here are passionate — about music, art, democracy. We’ve got passion.”
