Jazz Is Not Dead…

November 17th, 2003 • Barry's Imaginary Publisher

… It Just Smells Funny! The Independent: “Having infuriated its classical music traditionalists, BBC Radio 3 has angered jazz purists among its audience by deciding to feature the rock icon Frank Zappa.” Nice to see Zappa’s music is still capable of pissing off certain people. :)

This reminds me of the time I saw John Zorn perform while I was visiting a friend in New York.
It was a night of group improvisation featuring Zorn and various friends and colleges. We sat in the balcony of the theatre behind an older couple (early 60’s) that made a big show of emphatically “Shush”ing anyone who made the slightest noise during the performance. Finally, after about thirty minutes of this, My friend leaned forward, during a break in the music and asked the couple, in a loud voice, “You do realize this is the guy who wrote the song ‘Fuck Off Pretentious Jazz Snob’ don’t you?”
