Sleep Dirt
« on: August 27, 2002, 10:46:34 AM »

This has got to be the most amazing guitar song FZ has ever done (IMHO). I only heard it just the other day when I bought the album of the same name. My question is, does anyone have any live or bootleg MP3s or something of this song? I've looked for other albums with it on and I can't find any. I searched a program called KaZaA and I found a short live clip of it, it's really great (although poor quality), it has (from what I gather from http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/turtlestew/summerfa.htm) the '84 playing a mixture of the Black Napkins theme over Sleep Dirt. It's really great, but it's only about a minute and I can't seem to find any other versions of the song. So, any help?

Quite fond of it myself...

I was going to say that no live cuts of this exist; it was a studio tune, not done live...
And i probably would have been wrong.
(SOFA? Naw, no way...)

I was just in the zappa chatroom, with Joe (the Vaultmeister), splat (Patrick Neve), and Chunga (webmaster {?} of zappateers.com) and I asked them if they knew...
I was given the following dates as concerts where the Sleep Dirt melody was played (I was floored by this, as I had firmly believed it was a one-time studio affair):
73/05/09 New Jersey, 75/09/27 Santa Barbara, 75/10/04 ?, 84/12/13 Dallas, & 88/02/01 Tower Theater (a rehearsal tape of SD pre that night's show exists too, I'm told).
I can't say what tune it'd be called on these concert tapes; but, it's a start.
Good luck!

I had just purchased "Sleep Dirt" and was totally surprised on the song bearing the same name. Definitely have to scoure the albums looking for more acoustical guitar playing by FZ. It was a wonderful change from what I came to know and love.  Cool

There sure aint much of it out there...
I find his acoustic work quite pleasing myself. LMK how your search goes - as I have had no luck. I did manage to get ahold of the 88 rehearsal tape; a nice rendition of the song, but done on electrics, not acoustics.

Check "Bossa Nova Pervertamento" on the Mystery Disc...
beautiful ... I love this stuff.

Also Orange Claw Hammer with Capt.Beefheart played live in a (mock?) radio programme features FZ on acoustic guitar. (boot "An Evening With FZ and CB"), also on Beefheart's Grow Fins 4CD set, I think.

And, from that same "radio show", how about "Will You Drink My Water" performed by The Smegmates, guess who's that on acoustic guitar... ?  Cheesy

He does play acoustic guitar on "Project X" on Uncle Meat. Don't know if I want to count this one, it's more percussions ect...

The opening guitar pops up on Playground Psychotics (side one somewhere I think) and is abruptly faded into some diloge.  I wonder if FZ went on to solo over that?

cheers

off the top of me head there's the first guitar solo on 'my guitar wants to kill you mama'; backing to 'theme from burnt weeny sandwich', 'ocean is the ultimate solution', couple of tracks from 'SUNPYG', 'it just might be a one shot deal' & there's some beautiful acoustic playing on 'aybe sea'..

all i can think of right now!

I think it's silly that they didn't include "Sleep Dirt" as one of the bonus tracks on the three-disc Lather. Strange decision to leave it off.

Yessss- I just joined the group and was pleasantly surprised to find this thread! Sleep Dirt absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it(on 8-track,no less),partially because it seemed like an impromptu jam- damn, I wish his fingers hadn't"got stuck" so soon!

I have Sleep Dirt on mp3 if someone wants it let me know.
It is one my favorites-the opening is something I really like. Cool Before they shut down peer to peer sharing of music I spent many hours getting as much of Franks music as I could-not to mention the cd's I bought.   Shocked Cool
