Orchestral Zappa Affairs
« on: January 26, 2005, 07:28:23 AM »

Hi folks,
here's something I'd like to offer as a vine:
some (more) Orchestral Zappa for a change.

The content of this vine (in short):
- 1963-05-19 Mt.St.Mary's College LA (college orchestra) [FLAC],
- 1984-01-09 Paris Rehearsals (Ens.InterContemporain),
- 1984-06-16 A Zappa Affair (Berkeley Symph.Orchestra),
- 1993-02-27 NYC Zappa's Universe (Part1) (Orchestra Of Our Time),
- 2000-06-06 Köln (Ensemble Modern)

(all in MP3 except for Mt.St.Mary's)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It all started with an enthusiastic comment of our friend Lonesome Cowboy Squirt on the orchestral version of "Sinister Footwear" I found recently in the Apocrypha vine thread. So I thought, how about maybe giving him and everybody else in this forum the opportunity to enjoy a recording of the whole concert as it was broadcast on FM of which Apocrypha's "Sinister Footwear" is only an excerpt:

16-Jun 1984, Zellerbach Auditorium, University of California, Berkeley, CA
"A Zappa Affair". Berkeley Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano

This concert was available over a year ago in two consecutive parts on www.thebignote.com 's Musibrarium and I would like to thank TBN's Magic Fingers for giving me his blessings in allowing me to put it on this vine. He also made it possible for me to include a set of jpg reproductions of the original flyer and programme material to this concert. So, thanks very much again, MF.

The setlist: Bob In Dacron/Sad Jane, Mo 'n Herb's Vacation, Sinister Footwear (1st& 2nd mvt.), Ritual Dance of the Set Changers, Sinister Footwear (3rd mvt.), Spontaneous Minimalist Composition, Pedro's Dowry,
interspersed with original very funny preambles by FZ held on stage to each item and some FZ radio interviewing backstage.

This just amounting to 136 MB of MP3 (in 160 kbps), there's enough space on the CD-R for including some/all of the following:

9-Jan 1984, Theatre De La Ville, Paris, France
Ensemble InterContemporain rehearsal conducted by Pierre Boulez.
Dupree's Paradise, Naval Aviation In Art, The Perfect Stranger;
a KUR Friday Boot posted (by Gilles or Barry?) in October 2003.

27-Feb 1993, Avery Fisher Hall, NYC (part 1)
("Zappa's Universe II" feat. Mike Keneally, Scott Thunes, Mats Öberg, Morgan Ĺgren, Orchestra Of Our Time, conducted by ??)
I only have Part 1:
    1. Black Page #1, Black Page #2,
   2. Deserts [Varčse],
   3. Nite School,
   4. Ruth Is Sleeping,
was once posted by Filipe on his 'Now You See' webpage (Sorry, I don't have the URL).
Did he ever post Part 2? Anyway, I missed it...

From my own tape collection:
6-Jun 2000 Köln, Germany
Ensemble Modern plays Zappa Live
Greggary Peccary & Other Persuasions, cond. Peter Eötvös

a WDR 3 FM Radio recording including: What Will Rumi Do?, Night School, The Dangerous Kitchen, Envelopes, The Beltway Bandits, A Pig With Wings, Dental Hygiene Dilemma, Moggio, Naval Aviation in Art, Put a Motor in Yourself, Black Page Drum Solo, Black Page No.1, Peaches en Regalia, Dog/Meat, Amnerika, The Ensemble Members, G Spot Tornado.
I have included the full radio show (incl.applause, german radio talk) in basic MP3 sound quality (128 kbps),
as well as "just the music" again in better sounding MP3 (VBR 192kbps). Enjoy !!

And finally, let's go about 40 years back in time: Some of the oldest, if not the oldest FZ concert material available of which a short part can also be heard on "The Lost Episodes":
19-May 1963 Mount St. Mary's College, LA
and it's definitely no rock'n roll, instead (and I quote):
FZ on an interview from the 1992 Zappa! tribute magazine (Keyboard and Guitar Player):
"Actually, the first time I had any of it ["serious" music] performed was at Mount St. Mary's College in 1962. I spent $300 and got together a college orchestra, and I put on this little concert. Maybe less than a hundred people showed up for it, but the thing was actually taped and broadcast by KPFK. (...) By the time I graduated from high school in '58, I still hadn't written any rock and roll songs, although I had a little rock and roll band in my senior year. I didn't write any rock and roll stuff until I was in my 20s. All the music writing that I was doing was either chamber music or orchestral, and none of it ever got played until this concert at Mount St. Mary's."
The setlist of this recording:
1 ) Piece #2 of Visual Music 1957 for Jazz Ensemble and 16mm Projector
2 ) Explanation of previous piece
3 ) Piano Pieces From Opus #5
4 ) More Explanations
5 ) Collage #1 For String Instruments
6 ) Still More Explanations
7 ) Two Fragments Of Prepared Tape For Use In Opus #5
8 ) Opus #5 For Piano, Tape Recorder and Multiple Orchestras
9 ) Post Performance Discussion
As I got this one in FLAC format recently (through www.easytree.org ) I decided not to convert it to MP3 when I offer it here, in order not to get the lossless traders' community upset, (see more indepth discussion on that topic in other threads...) So I thought, this 45 minutes of rare stuff is compact data enough to get included here in it's original FLAC format for your enjoyment...
For Windows PC users: I have included a set of FLAC utilities (Winamp 2.x/5.x FLAC plug-in and the FLAC Frontend FLAC to WAV Decoding/Encoding software), I'm sure there's similar freeware available through the net for other OS...

Well, let's see if offering FZ material in FLAC (SHN etc.) format here on Uncle Beat catches on after all ...

Any takers for some serious music ??...  Wink
