Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / Re: A discussion of FRAUD - and what about Bob?

Per your request, SOFA, I'm going to repost what I posted on Hot Poop. But first, I'll say why I posted it there in the first place: This post was not ment for discussion; it was ment to be informative. If people run the risk of having their creditcards overcharged when ordering at barfko-swill, I think they have a right to know. A lot more people read HotPoop than the forums, so that's why I posted it there.
HotPoop entry: » 7:06 PM I'm going to vent here, so make way. As a loyal Zappa fan, I was being all excited over the new FZ release, "Frank Zappa In Australia". Pre-ordering was going to start last monday. So on tuesday, I went over to Barfko Swill and filled out the form in order to place my order. I got an error from the form at each time I tried to submit it - I retried 16 times. "CVV2 number wrong", "Duplicate Order", you name it. Never did i receive an order confirmation. The day after, I got a call from my bank asking me if it was normal that "a certain amount had been withdrawn from my Visa credit card 17 times". You guessed it: each time I got an error message, the amount had been taken from my Visa card. I've sent two e-mails to barfko.swill@zappa.com asking them to rectify this; no response yet. I'm facing having to pay for 17 copies of "FZ in Australia". With all due respect to the ZFT: that pre-ordering form does not work properly to say the least; and you have your webmaster to blaim for it. I will not pay for 17 copies because some shmuck of a would-be webmaster is fucking things up. Oh, and hey? This is my first and last barfkoswill purchase ever. Thank you. I feel better now. |

| Don't know if you've noticed, but there's a new email-address at zappa.com: vaultmeister@zappa.com. Someone on a list I subscribe to mailed the guy, and got a surprisingly quick response. Appropriately vague, it stated that 'they're hoping to release more in the future, and not solely via BarfkoSwill.' It's their intention to get the albums to the shops. Well that's good, since I'm not too fond of (pre-)ordering stuff online altogether... |

Worse case scenario, cs, we can help you thru these boards (I don't think Barry, or the KUR Team would mind). SOFA[/color] Well the KUR Team and myself in my capacity of Bogus Temporary KUR CEO had a meeting just yesterday (gotta love meetings on Sundays), during which we decided we would'nt have any problem with this kind of online educating through our boards. In fact: that's what they're for! |

Some more: "Charva" (if your father in law is a liquor store owner); "I promise not to come in your mouth" if your soon to be spouse can handle a bit of misplaced humour on the conjugal night (besides, it's a wonderful tune regardless), "Sharleena" (the Lost Episodes version preferably), a heartbreakingly honest account of uhh unacounted for love; and you know, for opening dance, I would sincerely consider "Watermelon in Easter Hay". And what better way to close it off, then with "Take your clothes off when you dance"? Loads of potential here... |

I posted this initially as a reply to the "new release??"-thread, but figured I'd post it here as well. There's a new email-address at zappa.com: vaultmeister@zappa.com. You haven't bored me CS, quite on the contrary. I found it a highly interesting, insightful and eloquent review. This is the only FZ record you have, right? I can't wait to read your review of the next album you've had a listen to! |

I love PoodlePlay. I simply adore PoodlePlay... And the more intellectually depraved it gets, the better it gets...
But seriously: although a highly entertaining read, I sincerely think that the book tells more about Ben Watson himself, than it does about FZ. He's an Oxford academic looking at the musical output of a US westcoast bred, unique set of brains... I don't think he gets any closer to the crux of the biscuit in most cases than any of us... Some of his thoughts are quite intricate, others downright ridiculous. So, in all: a thought-provoking must read, but with a lump of salt to go with it. |

Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / Re: Reggae and ska style

I also have to agree. I was listening to MAJNH and also realised there was a significant amount of reggae on that album, and other albums released around that same time. Sure, but MAJNH is an album highlighting the '88 band... doesn't support the argument that FZ was picking up on reggae way before the mainstream did (that would be: late 70ies), does it? Zappa's used the reggae-stance quite often, that's true. One other example that springs to mind is "Fine Girl" (Tinseltown Rebellion, 1981). I'm wondering where reggae crops up in Joe's Garage, hmmm... will have to listen to that one again, been a while... |

Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / Re: Genius?

FZ maintained thru countless interviews over the years that he composed music for his own enjoyment and no one else's. Sure, he wrote songs designed to "pay the bills", but that's not why he composed music. He did that because HE wanted to hear what it sounded like. SOFA This quote, I think, illustrates FZ's point of view on the topic quite eloquently: "The crux of the biscuit is: If it entertains you, fine. Enjoy it. If it doesn't, then blow it out your ass. I do it to amuse myself. If I like it, I release it. If somebody else likes it, that's a bonus." - Playboy, May 2nd 1993 |

Do you think I'd be devoting websites and messageboards and money to the man if he weren't? To answer your question, most definitely: YES. By the way, the question strikes me as sort of stupid, if I may say so |

Hey, does anybody remember that one day that zappa.com just had a blank blue background? I most certainly do! Monday, May 10, 1999. After a little over 3 years went by without any change or update at the site and suddenly everything went blue that Monday. It took me a while, but I figured out why. I was suprised that Gail could be so sentimental... SOFA Did it perchance have anything to do with the track "The Blue Light"? Just making a wild guess here... |

Favorites? WOIIFTM (sounds surprisingly fresh after all those years) Overnite Sensation (slightly more entertaining than Apostrophe) Roxy & Elsewhere (nearly burnt a hole thru the disc playing this) OSFA (yes, of course...) MAJNH (the wonderful wonderful 88 band at its best)
I'm surprized no one mentioned LATHER so far... |
