Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / Jobson
|
on: April 13, 2007, 10:05:38 AM

This particular thread has been inspired by a boot made avaible on this website. Thanks.
I have been enjoying the Playhouse 1977 boot for quite some time now, and especially the Black Napkins, along with Jobsons solo. Because of that I have been searching my other boots and records for Jobson-solos. And I was wondering: Eddie Jobson has been credited with keyboards And VIOLIN on the ZINY. But does he actually play violin on any tracks on ziny, and if so which? |

Frank Zappa / In-A-Gadda-Stravinsky / Re: What FZ Did You Listen To Today?
|

Today I have been listening to three records I just bought on LP. All of them I have heard before, but not on Vinyl, only on CD.
Bongo Fury, a very good album featuring good guitar solo (Walley as well as FZ), and the onlyBeefheart I have ever gotten used to, except from Safe As Milk (and some of the YCDTOSA-stuff)
Roxy & Elsewhere. This is without doubt my alltime favourite FZ-album, and on LP it sounds even more delicious! Thumbs up
and: Over-nite Sensation. It has never been any of my favorite, but it has some good songs nonetheless, allthough allmost all of the songs are available officially in other, and better versions. Especialy Zomby Woof (YCDTOSA 1).
Which brings me to my next issue. Why wasn't any of the 1973-stuff released officially? Just listen to the Sydney-concert (Thanks to Barry & the Friday-boots!) or the Piquantique-Stockholm concert! The band is awsome, especially Ponty's and FZ's solos. Plus the Farther O'blivion would add an extra dimension to the "conceptual continuity". The Version on YCDTOSA, what is that? And compared to that stuff Over-nite sounds kind of weak. |

The White Zone / No Commercial Potential / Audio classification
|
on: February 09, 2007, 01:54:35 AM

I have been wondering about this for some time now. In dealing with bootlegs, there is always an audioclassification, that is the recording is either SBD; AUD or FM. But there's also a grading, fx AUD B-/C+ or SBD A+, which I understand is signifying the quality. But are the grades comparable? Does that mean that an audience-recording graded A sounds better than a SBD-recording graded B? Or doesn't the grades relate in that way? |

Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / Zappa and the drums [help]
|
on: January 26, 2007, 02:56:42 AM

It's my friend's birthday soon, and so far his his experience with Zappa amounts pretty much to Sheik Yerbouti. And since he is a drummer I thought this was a good opportunity to broaden his horizon regarding Zappa a little, by giving him a Zappa-drum compilation. But the question is: which tracks to choose? I want him to experience the diversity of the drummers who have worked with Zappa over the years.
So far I have been thinking about some Aynsley Dunbar, perhaps "Grand Wazoo", the Chester Thompson/Ralph Humphrey "Echidnas Arf/Don't you ever", and Bozzio "The Black Page #1&2". Just to get the obvious in place. But, I am a bit uncertain regarding the early MOI, and the 80's.
I'll appreciate any advice from the Zappa experts frequenting this site, maybe there's even a few drummers out there who oculd tell me what they have found inspiring.

Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / After Zappa
|
on: January 15, 2007, 02:19:51 AM

I was amusing myself watching Zappa interviews on youtube, which is always fun. But then I found a playboy interview, interesting I thought, and it was, but at the end of the interview I got horrified, and felt kind of deserted by Zappa. This is what he said:
“After I am dead and gone, there is no need to deal with any of the stuff, because it is not written for future generations, it is not performed for future generations, it is performed for now. Get it while it’s hot, you know. That’s it.” http://youtube.com/watch?v=rKOI8QLO2Ds
I have heard Zappa saying that he doesn't care whether he will be remembered, but this is kind of saying: "Stop listening to my music, you're wasting your time!" That pretty much makes us all kind of superfluous, or I guess we just have to pay no heed to that remark.
Is this what Zappa really thought, or a media-stunt? |

The White Zone / Uncle Beat / Re:Wannabeard's Assortment

Well I have been trying to convert the show to mp3 by hooking my amplifier and lp-player to the computer, but it doesn't seem to work, I get this really loud hissing sound when I play the files, along with the actual music. So I don't know how to do it.
Sorry to disappoint you.
If anyone knows a solution to the problem I would be happy to try again, though. It sounds like when you turn your guitar-amplifier up really loud without hooking your guitar to the amplifier... |

Uncle Remus this morning just to get the day started...
Speaking of George Duke, has anybody heard his cover of Hendrix' Who Knows? with "Devoted Spirits", it's pretty cool, seems that Duke is still going strong!
Damn me for talking 'bout Hendrix in a Zappa-forum!!!
What happened to the supposed Zappa-Hendrix Jam? |

I don't know, I think I have quite a bunch, and they tend to change a bit over time. Ones that get me off are Zappa's guitar on Penguin in Bondage on Roxy & Elsewhere, I know it isn't very spectacular or anything compared to Zappa's more complex guitaring, but it works everytime. Also the tracks Echidna's Arf & Don't You Ever... gets me off.
Right now I'm pretty much into violin play Zappa's compositions, so I really enjoy Shankar on Conehead (Halloween) and Ponty's fiddleing on Farther O'blivion on some boot from '73 in Sydney (Horden? Pavilion,June(?), I think), but this track I have lost because I had to Format my harddrive because of some damn virus! Also I think the Be-Bop Tango part is better here, than on the actual Roxy album, wadda you think? |
