Book: Martin Gardner - The Colossal Book of Mathematics: Classic Puzzles, Paradoxes, and Problems. I've always been fascinated by math puzzles and M. Gardner is just on of the best authors on this subject. He also tries to revive some of Sam Loyd's works, a mastermind on math puzzles and inventor of the classic 15 puzzel: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/barry.r.clarke/zsamloyd.htm

It will be gigantic, not sure if the Musicutter software is capable of such a titanic task. But I'll find out soon...
Y'all have to bit patient, I'll be off the traveling quite a lot in October so there will be not much time to spare for cue sheet creation and, most important, correcting it so that'll cut the VBR MP3 correctly. But a crude version can be expected soon...

Sorry, I don't see the similarity you mentioned earlier, but the "her" word is abundant in both songs.
THE TEMPTATIONS LYRICS
Since I Lost My Baby
The sun is shining, there's plenty of light (oh yeah) A new day is dawning, sunny and bright (oh yeah) But after I've been crying all night The sun is cold, and the new day seems old Since I lost my baby. (Since I lost my baby.) Oh, since I lost my baby. (Oh, since I lost my baby.)
The birds are singing and the children are playing There's plenty of work and the bosses are paying Not a sad word should a young heart be saying But fun is a bore and with money I'm poor.
Since I lost my baby. (Since I lost my baby.) Oh, since I lost my baby. (Oh, since I lost my baby.) Next time I'll be kinder (Next time I'll be kinder) Won't you please help me find her (Won't you please help me find her) Someone just remind her (Someone just remind her) Of this love she left behind her (Of this love she left behind her) Till I find her I'll be trying ta (Till I find her I'll be trying ta) Everyday I'm more inclined ta Find her Inclined ta Find her Inclined ta find my baby Been looking everywhere (ba--by) Baby, I really, really care!
Oh, determination is fading fast (oh yeah) Inspiration is a thing of the past (oh yeah) Can't see how my hope's gonna last Good things are bad and what's happy is sad
Since I lost my baby. (Since I lost my baby.) Oh, since I lost my baby. (Oh, since I lost my baby.) I feel so bad (since I lost my baby) I feel so sad (since I lost my baby) Everything is wrong This heart is hard to carry on (since I lost my baby) I'm lost as can be (since I lost my baby) What's gonna happen to me? ZAPPA LYRICS
Find Her Finer
Find her finer, sneak up behind her, unwrap like a mummy 'til you finally unwind her. Find her, blind her, see who designed her, act like a dummy 'til you finally grind her.
If you should see a girl on the street, now maybe you might think she is sweet, but if you wanna tickle her treat, now really what should you do?
Don't never let her know you are smart. The universe is no place to start. You gotta play it straight from the heart, she gwine renunciate you.
That's why you gotta
Find her finer, sneak up behind her, unwrap like a mummy 'til you finally unwind her. Find her, blind her, see who designed her, act like a dummy 'til you finally grind her.
Now maybe you might think this is crude, and maybe you might think I am rude, and maybe this approach I have spewed is not the one for you.
But believe me later on you'll find, as you impress her with your mind, that you will just be left behind, for a wiser fool.
So you might as well
Find her finer, sneak up behind her, unwrap like a mummy 'til you finally unwind her. Find her, blind her, see who designed her, act like a dummy 'til you finally grind her.

It's all about preserving the recording... Points taken, you're perfectly right if you wanna trade with the traditional lossless traders, but the same issues stick for MP3 collectors, an MP3 files that has gone through a number of ripping/burning cycles also degenerates in quality.
In my opinion, one of the main reasons not everybody collects lossless is the issues of space; lossless audio compression is about 1:2. For MP3 (depending on quality) the compression rates are between 1:10 for 128 kbps non VBR and 1:4 for 384 kbps non VBR. Lets assume that VBR has an average compression ratio of 1:6.
There are about 1000 Zappa shows recorded, so a full Zappa collection (I wish) will be about 500 CDs (340 Gb) for lossless collectors, 100 CDs (70 Gb) for 128 kbps non VBR, 250 Cds (170 Gb) for 384 kbps non VBR and 170 CDs (115 Gb) for VBR. (All estimates of course).
A second issue for people wanting to start a lossless collection is the vast array of different lossless audio formats available. A quick search on the internet takes you to pages like this showing at least 10 different lossless audio formats. For compressed audio, MP3 is by far the most used format with lots of accessories (players, car stereo's,..) allowing you to listen to your favourit music.
So we can conclude: - MP3 is easy to use, widely available, take less space on media but does not preserve audio quality. Only collect in MP3 if audio quality is not very important to you. - lossless is a bit more difficult to use, there's not really a standard format available, takes a bit more media space, but does preserve audio quality. Only collect lossless if audio quality is realy important to you. - MP3 collectors should not crosstrade with lossless collectors and vise versa.
Browsing the posts on this forum shows that most people are happy with MP3 audio, but perhaps a lossless devotee would be so kind to start a new topic and educate us on the devine art of collecting in lossless format? Maybe this will turn us ignorant on lossless into people able to appreciate quality instead of quantity |

Anyway, about the mp3 thing: I totally agree with you guys that mp3-sourced shows sound just fine. It just seems like a majority of people in other trading circles don't want 'em, and I'd like to be able to trade anything I've got. Way off topic, but I couldn't resist it: I just wonder, how do lossless collectors keep their Zappa boot collection? As a stack of 1400 CDs or do they all have an array of multiple 500Gb harddisks? Believe me, there's a huge difference between a collection of 25 and 500+ shows.
And secondly, how many of these lossless collectors can tell the difference between a B or C grade boot as good quality MP3 and a lossless piece? A bad quality show doesn't sound any better lossless than it does in MP3. I agree that for A grade shows the difference between a low quality MP3 and lossless can be dramatic.
Anyway, one should be able to enjoy Franks music anywhere, anythime and for no reason at all in any format available, compressed or not. Amen |

Cutting part 1, version 2
Cutting this baby perfectly will be very hard, VBR MP3's are very difficult to cut precisely because of the nature of the Variable Bit Rate. Apparantly the MusiCutter software I described before, has some minor problems extracting a correct length of music using correct cue sheet timing data. It has to do with the omplexity of the VBR header structure and a lot of other techno blabla, but the result is: imperfect cuts.
This second cue sheet was created using Audacity (a freeware MP3 editor ) to find the exact timecodes for each part and was converted into a cue sheet format readable by Musicutter.
Audacity timecodes in MM:SS:MS format, start of each part is listed: 01 "Discard this (Dylan)" 00:00:000 02 "Introduction (with partial Peaches)" 01:21:680 03 "The Central Scrutenizer" 02:34:580 04 "TALK 1 - Who Was Frank Zappa?" 06:08:420 05 "The Way I See It Barry… - You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here" 17:42:000 06 "Aerobics In Bondage" 21:22:850 07 "Stick It Out" 24:23:070 08 "Let's Make The Water Turn Black -88-" 26:06:070 09 "Oh No -88-" 29:06:340 10 "Tell Me You Love Me -Tinseltown-" 30:20:490 11 "Dirty Love -YCDTOSA Vol 6-" 32:29:140 12 "Magic Fingers -YCDTOSA Vol 6-" 35:08:740 13 "Debra Kadabra" 37:29:850 14 "Can't Stand It -71-" 41:23:780 15 "The Young Sophisticate -Tinseltown-" 42:04:410 16 "Jones Crusher -Baby Snakes-" 44:40:570 17 "Teenage Prostitute" 47:38:180 18 "Cheepnis" 49:56:390 19 "What Ever Happened To All The Fun In The World?" 54:18:310 20 "Tink Walks Amok" 54:51:200 21 "TALK 2" 58:34:43 22 "St Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast" 63:34:360 23 "FZ Interview 1" 67:34:20 24 "Can't Afford No Shoes" 68:08:480 25 "TALK 3 - Ralph Stuffs His Shoes - Story About Junior Mintz Boogie" 70:46:700 26 "Junior Mintz Boogie" 90:13:950 27 "Bognor Regis?…" 93:09:070 28 "What Will This Evening Bring Me This Morning?" 97:48:980 29 "TALK 4" 101:02:760 30 "Tears Begin To Fall -Junior Mintz B-Side-" 105:10:870 31 "Jelly-Roll Gum Drop" 107:57:650 32 "Anyway The Wind Blows" 110:19:760 33 "You Didn't Try To Call Me" 113:09:490 34 "Dog Breath Variations -Uncle Meat-Vinyl Version?-" 117:07:320 35 "TALK 5" 119:52:460 36 "Cruising For Burgers -76 In New York-" 132:27:390 37 "FZ Interview 2" 141:24:750 38 "Cruising For Burgers -71-" 142:00:450 39 "Cruising For Burgers -Uncle Meat-" 144:53:490 40 "TALK 6 - End of first part -" 147:09:220
And no, these timecodes cannot be used directly by Musicutter, I tried and doing so gives a bunch of errors and lots of MP3 files of only 4K (remember the VBR header thing?).
Again, this new cue sheet is not perfect, there are still misses in fractions of a second, but is the best result I have so far.
I will post a perfect cue sheet when I find good MP3 cutting software that allows cutting VBR MP3's. I know there are some packages that claim VBR support, but none that I have tested proved worthy.
Alternatively, you can use Audacity to import the MP3 and cut each part manually using the timecodes supplied before
Enjoy and please post you comments, questions, suggestions or corrections.
Same procedure as before.

Hi there Guys (and Galls),
Holidays are over, back to work: How to cut Zappathon 2004 - part 1:
Copy and paste the text at the end of this posting into a text file and save it as "Zappathon 2004 part 1.cue" (exactly the letters between brackets).
Go on the internet and find a MP3 cutter, I personally use a program called Musicutter 0.7.1. You can find it at http://musicutter.szm.sk/. The download contains the program and a good help file. It does not add the MP3 tags.
The basics are: - in the software, select the Zappathon 2004 (pt.1).mp3 file (or whatever you renamed it to) - select a destination - use the import from file button to import the cue file saved previously - press the 'cut now!' button and after a couple of minutes you have a nice selction of split files.
A huge bravo for Balint on his effort disecting the first part, without this info, I wouldn't have been able to create this cue sheet (thanks Balint ).
Just one remark: This a quick and dirty first effort. I quickly checked the result, the cut is not perfect, for some 'songs' the cut is halve a second too early. The only way this can be solved is by finetuning the Balint list with tenths of seconds.
Give it a go and please post you comments, questions, suggestions or corrections.

Looking at the picture of FZ on this cover...I wonder, is this a real picture of Frank or a composite. Frank had long hair until approx. '81 turning to a grey moustache arround '85. The moustache and goatee have a rather wild look, in pictures of the same period, both always carefully trimmed. Especially the goatee is positioned too low and looks to be stuck on.
Clues anybody to the origin of this photo? |

Its my fault - of course its here, but I have soooooo much problems nowadays...
Understand that most problems are a good sign. Problems indicate that progress is being made, wheels are turning, you are moving toward your goals. Beware when you have no problems. Then you've really got a problem... Problems are like landmarks of progress. - Scott Alexander

Keep your spirits high, Balint
