91  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Pre-mature ideas: anatomy of a track on: May 16, 2005, 05:00:36 AM

Shall we go with option one then?

Providing we keep our options open Smiley as I suspect we will need an option 1.1, 1.2, 1.3... etc. etc. to cope with all the variations of the variations.
92  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Pre-mature ideas: anatomy of a track on: May 12, 2005, 03:10:05 PM
By the way: if you go to Román García Albertos' site (Lyrics & Elsewhere - http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/), you'll see that he's in for "option 2" as well...  Grin

All track variations are grouped on one track page. I think, this is most convenient.

What do you mean by All track variations are grouped on one track page?

It looks like a separate page for each album with links, grouped with the details of each track, to variations of the track on their own album page...

Perhaps this is option 4 Wink

Just in case you might wonder what I think of all this... I opt for number 2)... But don’t let this influence you in any way...

It didn't !  Grin

Option One for me please.

It is bad interface design for a link to take you anywhere other than where you expect it to go.

If I only had that one album and wanted information about the Pink Napkins track I would not want to start reading about some other track on some other album.  A link from the Pink Napkins page back to the original source of the track is fine but it is up to the reader to pursue it if they want to.

Every track on every album should have it's own page with links to related pieces: so on the The Legend Of The Golden Arches page there would be a note about similar themes and a link to the A Pound For A Brown On The Bus page.

The disambiguation pages would sort the identical names: thus giving us the clumsy Angry page headings...

Little House I Used To Live In (from Burnt Weeny Sandwich)
Little House I Used To Live In (from Fillmore East, June 1971)

We should lose the subheading...
Albums On Which This Song Has Appeared
as this sounds like the albums are just compilations of the same track and replace it with subheadings...
 This Track Also Appears On
for when it is exactly the same track, and
Versions Of This Track Appear On
for when it is the same but different Smiley track, or has a different title to the original version.

you will need a standards compliant browser such as Firefox...

You can't go wrong with a compliant browser...

Could Fido (does it have a name?) be flipped so s/he (does it have a gender?) is looking into the browser window rather than out of it - presumably seeking something interesting to read?

it would be nice to have a page (a thread?) like "stuff to do" or "stuff to continue" and to have a "sample-page" for these. Than it would be easy for us to join.

see my post about dead end pages in the Bend over and spread 'em: here come the stubs! thread. (OK it was a bad name Smiley) for Stuff To Do.

I fint track/album and so on... But no discography, chronologically.

What do we mean by chronologically?  In the order of release, or the order of recording (Joe's Corsage at the beginning or the end?) or order of composition?  See FZ's comment about it all being one single piece.

97  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Bend over and spread 'em: here come the stubs! on: May 03, 2005, 04:40:55 PM
Also:

There is a list of Dead End Pages which are lonely pages that have no links to anywhere else in the Wiki.

So, for example, selecting Bruce Bickford from the Dead End list will take you to the Bruce Bickford page.  This has stuff mentioned in it that has yet to be linked to their own pages.

Once you have set up a Wiki account you can click the edit tab at the top of the page and start to make changes.  To make a link you simply need to a enclose the item within two square brackets - change "Video From Hell" to [[[Video From Helll]]]. Click on Show Preview to admire your work. Your link will be blue if the page exists or red if there is no such page.  Capitalise titles so "A Token of His Extreme" becomes [[[A Token Of His Extreme]]].

Click the This is a minor edit box and then Save Page.
But don't save this example Bruce Bickford page for now - select another Dead End page from the list to work on - there are plenty to choose from Smiley

Use the discussion tab at the top of the page if you want to raise any questions or just leave some information for another user to add to an article later. You Preview and then Save discussions as on the Edit section.

98  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Layout and headings on: April 27, 2005, 04:46:10 PM
Would it be a good idea (as it is my idea it obviously will be Wink) to have a section/category of templates of pages with just the headings (eg Lyrics / Players On This Song / Albums In Which This Song Has Appeared / Notes About This Song / CC In This Song) so contributors can cut and paste a fresh standard layout without having to check with a previous entry to see what headings should be included?

Also...

Should the Albums In Which This Song Has Appeared heading be changed to Records Which Have Included This Song (or some such) to accommodate tracks that have been issued as singles as well as album tracks?
eg Who Are The Brain Police which just has the singles tacked onto the end.

So that's where my worn out video of this went!

Yes please...

smooghead >>> Bálint(HU) >>> Barry(BE) >>> St Tan(SE)>>>Duncan(UK)

100  Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / Early homes on: April 19, 2005, 10:20:23 PM
Does anyone have actual the actual address for FZ early homes...

Was there a number for Park Heights Avenue?

Is 15 Dexter Street  Edgewood in Baltimore or Washington or elsewhere?

Opa-Locka Florida address?
101  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Listing song lyrics per Track on: April 12, 2005, 12:40:09 AM
I am still not convinced.  Would it not be better with a separate category for the lyrics linked to from the track details?  Why just the lyrics why not musical notation too? - I know the answer Smiley

I guess there will be many instances like Little House... which exist in many forms.  Describing the Burnt Weeny lyric free version and listing the lyrics for the Fillmore version on the same page is surely going to confuse rather than enlighten the new visitor.

Even when there are lyrically virtually identical pieces they can be different... Trouble Coming... on Freak Out is from one era and serves one purpose while More Trouble Coming... on Roxy is from another era and serves another purpose.

On the Roxy album it is linked with Son Of Orange County although that quotes the lyrics from Oh No...  etc. etc.
102  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Naming Stuff (The Re-Mix Revisted) Part 79 on: April 07, 2005, 02:35:03 AM
You're forgetting that any "visitor" is a potential "editor"... obfuscating the links like that may be confusing for anyone having to edit a page without knowing what a "piped link" is.

So we should leave all wiki code littering the pages so that any future visitor/editor could pick them up without having to go and find out for themselves?

A Track page will list every version of a "song", or "piece". So "Uncle Meat (The Track)" will list all those versions - at least that's how I'd envisioned it.

Is it possible to set an anchor point on the Uncle Meat page so a link from any particular Uncle Meat track jumps directly to that particular section of the Uncle Meat page?

What about the album (Sleep Dirt?) that started life as an instrumental album but ended up having a vocal part added?

To quote Dweezil:
Quote
“The problem we will encounter is the way that Frank worked. He would often take stuff from alternated takes and build something out of it, and insert it into something else. That stuff is usually not documented"

If only FZ had been a wiki kind of guy... Wink

I'm not going to go down the alphabetical Bandmembers list

But if you were to go to the Bandmembers list you will find them sorted by last name rather than first so Bruce Fowler sits in close proximity to Walt Fowler rather than dispersed to the opposite ends of the (original) list.
104  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Naming Stuff (The Re-Mix Revisted) Part 79 on: April 06, 2005, 04:38:05 AM
Yes the piped variation would be good.  The addition of the clumsy (The Track), to accommodate our rampant cutting and pasting shortcomings, should be invisible to the user who should be spared the tangle beneath the wiki's workings.

Yes I know what the edit tab is for but am often reluctant to use it because I fear I would be adding yet another layer of complexity (which would make sense to me) that would probably irritate others...

We currently have Any Way The Wind Blows(BTB), Any Way The Wind Blows(The Track), and a link from CWRATJ to Anyway The Wind Blows...

See also www.anywaythewindblows.com which has nothing to do with any of this Smiley

Should the Yellow Shark Uncle Meat track be linked to the Uncle Meat albums track/s or should it have it's own Variations on The Uncle Meat Variations?

We now have a category for bootlegs.  I assume this will be for all bootlegs.  Will we end up with albums with the same name but with variations in the tracks on each album and countless variations on tracks/personnel all listed under a single track title heading?

105  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Naming Stuff (The Re-Mix Revisted) Part 79 on: April 05, 2005, 10:38:45 PM
Is it too late to object to the addition of (The Track) to songs that have been around since the beginning but now have to suffer this renaming indignity because someone lacked the imagination to think up a new name for their own third rate, rip off, lacking credibility, bootlegged album?

What about the Uncle Meat track on Yellow Shark that links to Uncle Meat(The Album) or should that be Uncle Meat (The CD) as it is not an album I recognise?

What about self referential tracks where the track has the same title as the album they are on?  You Are What You Is and Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Some More spring to mind.
I am sure we could find much Zen enlightenment from such circular explorations but the Wiki won't like it.
