61  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Uploading album cover art on: September 04, 2005, 01:49:18 AM
I do not have a problem with any particular date/cover but I feel it should be identified for what it is.  Refering to an original issue date but showing a later cover will confuse rather than clarify.

The release date should state where this date applied - or it should not be included anywhere other than in the Versions table for each particular release.

If you go to http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php/Talk:Main_Page, you'll find an expression "Duncan's Daily Whinge"

Had you chosen to quote fully it would read: Duncan's Daily Whinge :-)  It is nearly six months old.

Today I have a whole lot of new stuff to whinge about because the wiki is alive and well and growing daily; with much good work and some unique stuff going into it.

No, the wiki is not "dead meat".

I am sorry! Was I not clear enough? The discography is crap! I suggest we stop and have a serious discussion about it.

The Pink/Black Napkins thing is not so much a problem to be fixed as indicative of the flaws within the discography and the way it works.

Why are you adding numbers to the tracks? Did I mention how bizarre the whole thing is? We now have 200 Motels renamed as 1971 and numbered 1 - 34 with something called 1997 tacked on the end and numbered 1 - 6.   Huh  In the age of hyperlinks why do we need numbered listings?

Bootlegs come in ever changing versions: I have several 'Tis The Season/Electric Aunt with variations of tracks.  But I also have a lot of mp3s.  It seems to me that I will need to know a name of a bootleg that included the track that I have as an mp3 file before I can track down what it is and where it came from - of course I can't do that yet as all tracks just link back to some homogenous page that happens to have the same title but has no relevance to my search.

With the arrival of FZ on iTunes people can now buy individual tracks rather than entire albums.

I suggest that the entire discography is built upon a foundation of individual pages for each and every track/song/piece - we will have, at least, 12 pages of King Kongs - with the musicians/lyrics etc. attached to their own page.  Musicians are linked out to their own page.

This track page is then linked up a level to the album/concert that it came from with some form of cross referencing to other versions of that particular track.  There are also links to variations of the album - rare Russian pressings etc.

From the musicians page there are links back down to each track they performed on.

It is not a particularly simple or elegant solution but that is FZ's fault not mine   Wink

Alternatively, Duncan, we could start wiki.duncanmoran.me.uk, where no such thing exist as "Stuff (The Album)", "Stuff (The Track)", or "Stuff (The Film)", and where people have names like "Zappa, Frank" instead of "Frank Zappa"...  Grin

Now you're talking!  Grin

Continuing discussion from the Wiki:

I can go to Wikipedia and find out about stuff I do not know anything about.

Imagine someone coming to our Wiki who knows nothing about FZ and only has one recording about which they want to find  more iinformation.

Chances are our discography will just leave them confused.  If they have a track called Pink Napkins we will take them to a page called Black Napkins.  If they have a track called Sofa we will take them to a page that lists Sofa 1 and Sofa 2 from OSFA.  They can find the lyrics which may or may not match their version.  They can find a list of musicians who may or may not match their version.  They cannot find out about the cover art or the production/engineering of their version.

We include notes with track numbers although we do not number the tracks.  Are bootleg records particularly relevant in the mp3 age? Should tribute bands be included in an FZ discography? All of which merely add to the clutter and confusion imho.

etc. etc. etc.

Could you guys tell me how you feel about it ?

I have never liked this cutting and pasting of other peoples stuff into the wiki. It is too easy to perpetuate the mistakes.  If you care enough why not write it yourself?

Did you verify any of this information before pasting it in?  As far as I recall the UK (British?) issue SVLP 9154 had a black label. Should label colours be listed with each disc or included on the Verve Records page?  The wiki has it's own structure so just dumping other peoples stuff into it starts to break up that structure.

71  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / Re:Zappa Biography on: June 30, 2005, 10:12:28 PM

Copy/pasted zappa.hu's biography text in the Biography page. This is to be considered a rough draft, still needs some wikifying at this point.

Why?

The first paragraph is factually inaccurate and the whole piece goes down hill from there. So why was it considered worthy for inclusion in our Wiki?  Do we really need yet another list of albums and musicians (some come complete with dates of birth, but others do not) when we have whole pages already dedicated to each and everyone of them?

I know the standard response will be "Click On Edit" but before I click on edit and delete the whole thing it would be good to have the views of other people for once.

Is the shop closed and, if so, how does one go about getting the more recent releases? Huh

Clicking Cancel for the password thing takes me to the storefront page which says Our online store is currently closed.

Try CD Connection who seem to have Domage and Quaudiophiliac etc.

Is there any particular reason why I am Logged In on the wiki's  main page but then logged out and so prevented from editing everywhere else?

A chap could start to feel unwanted.

don't bitch, hit the edit button and make it better.

Perhaps I just prefer the wrong records but most that I look at seem to have this problem.  I was merely trying to invoke some discussion as to how we should address this fundamental flaw. But I am happy to (repeatedly) hit the edit button and do it my way - regardless of what anyone else may think Wink

Barry said in another thread...
Quote
(discog's been humming along nicely in its own peculiar way though)

A "normal" discography would be fine...

The discography is most peculiar and not at all "normal".  It neither informs nor enlightens..

If I am looking at the listing for Mystery Disc and want to find out more about the track called Original "Duke Of Prunes" I am sent to the Duke Of Prunes page where I can find out stuff about a track from Absolutely Free (some of the information there seems to be factually dubious) but I learn nothing about the Original "Duke Of Prunes" track.

If I am looking at Orchestral Favorites I see a list of Players but following the link to Duke Of Prunes I see another list of Players who, according to us, play on this track.

In what sense is the discography "humming along nicely"?
