5  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / re: wiki jawaka chat on: March 18, 2005, 08:55:29 PM
I'm sure "Waka/Jawaka" is copyrighted... but is "Wiki Jawaka"?
it don't matter...here's a sampling of what to consider when it comes to © ® infringement, it probably falls into the bunch of other stuff category

re: another non-profit fz-related project
Quote
...just a cursory glance suggests that it incorporates at a minimum some of what are known as common law trademarks and certain copyrighted materials.

Then there is just the most basic matter of trading on FZ's name (yes), image (yes), likeness (possibly not), good will that he created in his lifetime (yes) and a bunch of other stuff...

the name is great, hate to see the project get so big & popular that it starts drawing some unwanted attention

before abandoning the name, nothing to loose by emailing gail@zappa.com & ask what she thinks...it's non-profit, informative, and maybe if gail knows she can participate, she might throw in a few undisclosed/unpublished factoids
6  Frank Zappa / Zappa Wiki Jawaka / re wiki jawaka chat on: March 17, 2005, 06:07:42 PM
pretty sure the chat room at z.com is public

the content looks great so far, looks like it's gonna get pretty big....i'd re-consider the jawaka part of the name or be prepared for a cease & desist
7  Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / re: how to manage a boot collection on: March 03, 2005, 09:17:35 PM
no, please don't postpone it just to put a few bells & whistles on it, they can wait for v1.02.... Grin

the text files i use only have my own collection on it, it's just a quick way to find a show or track without shuffling thru all my cdr's

each cdr has a label with all the tracks on it, the cdr's are number & stored on the shelf in consecutive order, so i search the first index to see if i have the show, then i can find which cd it's on

too many gigs to store on my machine; the cdr's get burned as soon as i get 700 megs, so they're in essentially random order

i use fzshows to compile a z-notes .txt file similar to the zappateers standard info file, with a tape review added (if it exists) and the original file names with file size

i like the idea of starting with the complete fzshows list and somehow denoting which ones you have & which ones you still need, including missing or partial tracks

a colleague uses an excel file to manage his boots in a sortable format, including year, city, cd number, size of show, number of tracks per show, show duration and comments; limited to shows rather than individual tracks....he also his entire collection on his machine, giving each show it's own folder so he can generate a .txt file that lists every track, date created, file size etc; searchable but not sortable

the offline zappabase [download from zappateers] also has a way to manage your boots, but it requires some database savvy & i haven't been compelled to find the time to figure it out yet
8  Frank Zappa / Strictly Critique / re: how to manage a boot collection on: March 01, 2005, 10:59:44 PM
...Would this kind of thing interest any of you?
If so, what kind of other features would you expect from such an application?
that would be cool, i'd like to try it...
  • if we have an incomplete show, any way to highlight missing tracks either in another color/font or put them at the bottom of the list for that show
  • anyway to import a filelist rather than having to add them one at a time...i use a cd label program that extracts file info & creates a tracklist
  • include file extensions: .mp3 .wav .flac etc...
  • include track duration & file size
  • link to tape reviews from fzshows & buzby's '88 tour reviews
  • linked to zappabase by song

I can't access the zappa.com forum (or any of the site for that matter), for a whole day now, is this the same for everyone?
 Huh

yea, down for over a day; however barfko swill is up, can't let those e-cash registers shut down down...

[speculation] zappa.com is about to offer the complete fz catalog re-issued in some non-ryko--marginally-different-than-before format, maybe some new stuff[/speculation]
15  The White Zone / The Phoebe Snow Chill Out Room / re: friday is 'use the zappa.com forum day' on: December 12, 2004, 10:00:51 PM
that thread was started by yer old buddy isaac in the pre-banned days...he was actually tryin to drum up support for the kur forums for whatever reason, maybe he thought more action was required, whatever

post #2 was mine; was browsing kur & came across barry's alt.fan.fz story - fascinating stuff - pre-dates me and i've always wondered about the origins of the old fz mythology...when isaac deleted the initial post, the thread is out of context; i've gone back & edited what's now the 1st post with a bit of an explanation

someone quoted the original isaac post before it was deleted:

chris f suicide chumped a couple times over there, one before my time, one after...couldn't get along with some of the more opinionated members & bailed

the chris federico memorial bbq and epitaph

re: 75-page threads... the 1st 74 pages are usually irrelevant, so no need to dredge thru the primordial ancient slime, i mean who cares what 'the secret word for tonight is....' 1300 posts ago, or what someone's favorite guitar solo was; these threads go along way towards breaking the ice for newbs who may be intimidated otherwise... & all those deathless association threads seem have died & nobody's flogging that horsie these days

i learn new shit about fz every week & i wasn't any entry-level fz freak when i started a year & a half ago

some good people, also some assholes, gail shows up now & again, vaultmeister joe drop's in & it's essentially self-moderating

alot of the shit that goes on is juvenille & pointless, but hey, whatever you can do to have a good time let's get on with it, it's the world's 2nd finest optional entertainment

plus, they got the pumpkins

btw, whatever happened to debK ¿
