RIP Jimmy Carl Black

Very sad news comes to us from Jerry Ford, long time friend of JCB, and caretaker of Inkanish Records:

It is my sad duty to report the news that JIMMY CARL BLACK has passed away. Jimmy left this earth around 11pm Germany time on October 31st. of cancer.

A benefit concert is being planned for December 7th in California, more information on that here (soon). And of course there’s the London benefit, which takes place next November 9.

All of us here at KUR wish to pass our condolences to Jimmy’s family. I think it’s safe to say that, through his music, Jimmy has made a lasting impression on each of our lives. He shall be sorely missed…

  1. So long, Jimmy. Maybe now you’re finally gonna get paid (or at least down a few celestial beers…)!!!

How does the Jimmy Carl Black Memorial Nebula sound to you, Barry?

  2. I was fortunate enough to see Jimmy play with the mothers in 1969.
RIP, Jimmy Carl Black, the Indian of the Group.

  3. I work at a radio station in Boston and we had Jimmy down on two occasions. Never forget his wonderful sense of humor. What a character. Extremely sad.

  4. See, if Gail had gotten upset about people disrespecting her husband’s atheism I would be on her side. Can it, you superstitious morons, if there is a time and a place for religion, it certainly ain’t a Zappa site!

  5. Clark,

So just because FZ wasn’t religious, his fans can’t be religious? This isn’t an official FZ site, and his fans can believe and express whatever they want. How does one disrespect atheism anyway? What a stupid phrase.

    RIP JCB

  6. @Clark: Respecting the life of someone recently passed in itself has nothing to do with religion. And how exactly is the death of one of Frank Zappa’s most prominent band members not relevant to a Zappa site? I’m afraid this new wave of teenage/twenty-something internet atheists are closer to the stereotypical evangelistic zealots than any real life religous people I know. Of course that’s mostly due to the anonymity of the internet, but all that’s irrelevant atm.

    RIP Jimmy Carl Black.

Hey, Clark, even Zappa had a respect for people’s religious beliefs (albeit with a very large grain of salt and a lot of good humour — listen to M-A-R-J-A-R-I-N-E). FZ never told anyone what to think, only that they should actively do so. This is good advice for you, me, Gail…anyone. And we should all refrain from putting words in Frank’s mouth, or appointing ourselves as such mouthpieces. Really, it’s all about the music, isn’t it?

P.S. On many issues I find myself in complete disagreement with FZ’s opinion. Does that make me a bad fan? Quite the contrary, I would think.

  8. Be nice if there was some comment on zappa.com, but that would be too respectful, and of course JCB was never anything more than an employee.

JCB left us a lot of great music and humour… thanks.

  9. Sorry to break the chain of JCB tributes, but I would like to lighten the mood by saying: BARACK OBAMA!

  10. RIP Jimmy Carl Didn’t Houdini die on Halloween as well?

I think the American Indian would be happy an African-American was elected President of the U.S.A.

    So do I.

  12. I notice Al Stone pointed out the Guardian obit a couple of days ago. I was pleased to see, and those of you across the pond will doubtless be interested to know, that the Independent, another British national newspaper, also had an extensive JCB obit (plus photo) on Thursday. What have the press over there had to say?

  13. Met Jimmy several times….always a cool guy with time for the fans. He will be missed.

  14. How you disrespect Frank’s atheism is by spouting superstitious nonsense on a site dedicated to the memory of a man whose entire life was anti-such bogus pursuits. I should have thought that was obvious!

    😕 ???
